just thought i'd let you know i put week 3 + week 4 into my supermarket and shopped through asda (thats where the shopping list prices are based)

it now comes to £37.77 (but could save 47p by swopping milk)
it was £36.96 so only 81p dearer (or 34p with swops)

this is an increase of just over 2%

    Hi Kaz

Sorry to hear that you had problems with the increase of the Cheap Family Recipes shopping list. I have just put the first list through asda.com and it comes out at about £4 more expensive for the first week. Obviously still a bit more but not as much as £14. Just thought that might be uplifting news for you as it is depressing when things seem so much more expensive :-)

Anyone tried it for a shop other than Asda......we only have Tesco, Lidl, Coop here and so could never do the shop in Asda ? If noone has tried Tesco I might do at some point, just out of interest. Also is there any chance of any other recipes appearing on there, just that DS (4) although not that fussy, would struggle with some of the onion-based dishes. Judst wondered.....we did try the burgers that weezl suggested (not sure if made it to final planner) but we didn't like them :(. Still always open to suggestions........
(ETA I just tried but had to make up a post code as we don't get deliveries here, then told me butternut squash was out of stock in that area and won't let me change area.....stopped at first hurdle....if anyone else can help would be great!).

even tho our tesco is only a 10-15mins drive away i find delivery is cheaper because you have to do a round trip, iykwim and you can get £3 slots, i think asda do an even cheaper slot, unless i'm going for whoopies or to another shop nearby i'd order online
    DEC GC £463.67/£450
    EF- £110/COLOR]/£1000

    tesco week 3 = £23.24
    asda week 3 = £20.56
    sainsburys week 3 = £28.02
    ocado week 3 = £32.52

    all prices from mysupermarket.co.uk

prices my alter when changing from asda to other supermarkets as it may have offers but on first glance asda is the cheapest.

very tempted to price the whole month on mysupermarket to see how close it is

Thanks for checking these out. It seems that things haven't risen by so much after all. It would be interesting to find out what the difference would be over the whole four weeks

sat and put the month into "my supermarket" and got these figures
    asda £112.75
    tesco £118.23
    sainsburys £140.72
    ocado £178.93

these are done with as close as possible to the list as the spices used are not online etc

Perth?!! Surely Peterhead, Inverness, Huntly, Elgin are all closer than Perth to Orkney! Not to mention Dundee..

My main point was that not all of us have Asda, and as it seems to be cheaper I wondered what prices would compare like in other stores!

(To answer your question though: We would never come to the mainland just do a supermarket shop, instead we might stock up on some things while we are there anyway.
The two main ways to get from Orkney to the mainland are via boat to Scrabster and onward south via Inverness-Perth-Glasgow/Edinburgh (A9 route) or boat to Aberdeen and onward south via Dundee-Perth-Edinburgh/Glasgow (A90 route).
Peterhead is north of Aberdeen and so not convenient for the direction we travel (and does it have Asda ?), there is no Asda in Inverness that I know of, Huntly and Elgin are also not on our route (they are not too far from Inverness so might be handy if we were holidaying there not just passing through, possibly). Dundee would only be on the way if we went via the Aberdeen route, but then Aberdeen would be nearer so pointless going to Dundee specifically.
Believe me I have explored all the supermarket options on the A9 route and the closest ones, on our direct route, are Morrisons (Invergordon), Tesco (Inverness and Perth) and Asda (Perth). If we went the Aberdeen route, which we don't tend to, well Aberdeen supermarkets would be nearest to the boat! Wick Tesco is also not too far away but then it does involve an extra journey too.
When we come to the mainland we normally stay in the Glasgow area and there are loads of Asda shops there, bit of course we can only bring non-perishables!
With the price of fuel it seems silly going off our route, which is already nearly 300 miles!)
Sorry if this bores others, just felt the need to clarify!)
