I think MUMOF4 does really well and I couldn't do it any cheaper! I'm not managing to! My problem is coeliac member of the family meaning many recipes with cheap ingredients are out of the question for us. The Sainsburys feed a family for £50, 5 out of 7 nights contain gluten so we can't do. Any pasta free, sausage free, gluten free ideas welcome!!!?!?

I have a veg mousakka recipe that might work for you.

I make the sauce with onions, grated carrots, peppers red lentils, veg stock and tinned tomatoes. Thickly slice an aubergine and fry off in olive oil. Thickly slice potatoes and parboil.

I then layer in a casserole dish- sauce first then aubergine then potato. I top with with a cheesy topping of a couple of eggs whisked with some natural yogurt and a handful of grated cheese. Bake until the topping is firm and golden brown.

Also sag aloo might be a good gluten free option with some rice. Fry off an onion, add a tsp of garam masala and chilli powder. Add par boiled diced potatoes and frozen spinach, half a tin of coconut milk and some veg stock and simmer. Throw in some chopped tomatoes close to the end. Serve with rice. The coconut milk makes it a bit more expensive and could be replaced with a tin of tomatoes to make it cheaper, but I prefer it with coconut.

Last night I made a pasta bake and hm chips. Pasta was 46p (Sainsburys basic range) Homepride pasta sauce £1.00 (B&M's) half a block of cheese for sprinkling over the top (half a £2 block from Iceland) and 1 garlic clove, 1/3rd (max) from a bag of spuds from local farm shop (about 50p)

This fed 4 of us for tea with bread and butter, then me and hubby for supper (less chips though so works out cheaper) and tonight so 8 meals in all for about £3 (just under 38p a head)
  • Not sure if anyone else is interested, but I didn't have anything better to watch on telly, so entered the OP's list into MySupermarket to see how things have changed.

It's as close as I could get to the same specifications/quantities and with adding £6 for a Saturday morning delivery slot, the same shopping would now cost £62.46.

There are things which are pretty much the same prices and some that have shot up considerably, but a £12.50 increase on what was an incredibly economical shopping list in the first place, is a lot of money when the most likely to be doing this are those on the lowest incomes.

Pasta, potatoes and bread - I'm no low-carber but

My version of that meal for 4 of us woud be half a bag of pasta, hm sauce with ss milk, cheese, some onion, peas, maybe frozen spinach and served with a salad

    Pasta (half a bag) 23p
    Half l milk 33p
    Tbsp flour - 1p
    Tbsp butter - 10p
    Quarter bloc of cheese 50p
    200g frozen peas - 20p
    Onion - 10p
3 toms from aldi super six 20p
    Half a lettuce 25p

50p a head but with at least 2 of the 4 a day each

Maybe, but for a cheap, tasty filling meal when I had nothing else to offer hubby for his tea I don't think he was too bothered about the amount of carbs on his plate.

Eating that every night would be a problem however once in a while won't hurt anyone.

We have all enjoyed a chip butty for tea when we are skint, but I personally wouldn't be holding it up as a nutritious example. If posting a meal for scrutiny you have to be sure it is nutritionally sound!
