  • My father in America is looked after by my brother. If they go to a restaurant, then they always take a doggy bag back for my fathers dinner the next day. I have a very very small appetite despite the large waist, and never manage to finish what is on my plate. I would like to ask for a doggy bag, but if I am on a date with a new guy, it might embarrass him.
Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money but you can't get more time
  • If there is any food left on my plate it's because it didn't taste good therefore i'm not wanting to take it home with me :-)

I'm gobsmacked at the number of people who are embarrassed to ask to take left-overs home with them. It's your food, you've paid for it, and if you leave it, it's just going to go in the bin!

I routinely ask to take leftovers home if we have leftovers worth saving, in all kinds of restaurants from cheap and cheerful to posh. I've never experienced so much as a raised eyebrow from a waiter - they're always perfectly happy to oblige.

To be fair, I'm married to an American and I don't think I ever did this before I met her. But still, if you call yourself an MSE you shouldn't waste food that you've paid for!

I never ask for a doggy bag, because I never order more than I can eat.
If I am particularly hungry I'll order a starter, if not, I'll go straight into the main course. Then if I am still hungry, the desert menu often provides plenty of range from small items to fill a tiny gap, or huge dishes if still really hungry.

I hate it when people eat out at restaurants and waste half the food. Why order it if you are not going to eat it. It's such a waste, not just of money but also good food.

We did exactally that at the weekend, I know it's all well saying "you should not order more than you can eat" but when you have had little to eat all day you feel like a big meal, luckily we went to Pizza Hut and they just put what was left in a box and we had it the day after so no waste!

  • This thread came to mind yesterday when I was taken out to lunch by a friend. The portion was massive and I asked the waitress if I could get the remainder wrapped up to go. She was very nice - said they didn't have any containers, would a bit of foil do? When she came back, they'd put it on a mini plastic plate and wrapped it in foil, then cling film. It even had a napkin tucked in! *LOL* Now THAT'S what I call service! *LOL*

The friend I posted about above ^ IS a new guy (2nd date) and he was quite happy for me to have it to go...AND he wants to see me again! He wasn't embarrassed at all. I say, get them into the moneysaving ways from the start! :rotfl: Do you really want to hook up with someone who doesn't respect the value of money?

P.S. Of course if I'm going somewhere afterwards I'd not be carting around any food unless we're in our own transport! :)

I would be far too embarrassed to ask for myself. If someone in my party asked, i would be mortified........but really thinking about it, why not, we have paid for it afterall. I certainly think its the word 'doggybag' that puts me off!! Can't they call it something else!!
  • It's easy enough to say don't order what you can't eat, but the establishment is in charge of portion sizes - you can't do much about that. Personally I would much rather see smaller portions and smaller prices!
