Do you ask for a doggy bag? Poll results/discussion

Options
Poll ran 28 July - 04 August 2008.

In the USA, even in some quite upmarket restaurants, it's common to be offered a doggy bag so you can take the remainder of the food home with you. Is our culture different?

Do you ask for a doggy bag in the UK if you’ve food left?

A. Always – we always want to take the food home. - 11% (802 votes)
B. Occassionally – If there’s lots left and it's been expensive - 25% (1882 votes)
C. Rarely – I’ve done it once or twice but that’s it - 25% (1902 votes)

D. Never – doggone no way. - 39% (2993 votes)

I always order 2 starters when I go for a curry, eat a bit of both, then am full, so dip my naan in my curry sauce, and take everything that's left home.

I could never eat a starter, a whole curry and a naan bread in one sitting, but I'll be darned if I'm leaving it there! :rotfl:

That's the only place that I've regularly needed to. I did have to ask for my dinner at Pizza Express to be 'take away' as between ordering it, and it arriving at the table I had a bit of a tiff with the other 'arf and wanted to go home...

In more expensive restaurants, I find that generally I don't over eat as the portions are more 'normal' sized so haven't needed to ask! Although these days I would be happy to, if there was sufficient to make a small meal out of. If there was just scraps, then no way would I (I wouldn't want to have to carry it :rotfl: !

in a pizza hut place, yes, and do regularly.... but in a normal restaurant, generally not...

We often eat in buffet style indian/chinese places so doggy bags are not an option, or i'm sure we would!!!!
I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....

I never do, but my Father In Law always does. Last time we went out for a meal he asked for Cheese and Biscuits after, ate one chunk of cheese and then requested a doggy bag for the rest of it. He took the whole lot home with him.

I always take a couple of smallish freezer bags with me. I must admit when the waitress iant looking i take a few leftovers. I have always done this, but it genuinely has been for our dog. Once in a chinese restaurant i had got a vegetable curry and couldnt eat even half of it and i asked for it to take away. no problem at all. would still probably sneak out anything worthwhile!!!
  • I must admit to having done this on occasion, although I'm usually much more likely to polish off what's put in front of me in restaurants.

However, I think that there might be less of a stigma attached to this activity (the overall point of this poll, after all?) if the term 'Doggie bag' could be given a slightly better name instead.

    Any suggestions?
