Wow this really seems to have divided opinion doesn't it? I've read this thread in fascination at the different approaches.

I nearly always ask to take leftover pizza home and sometimes curry if I feel there's enough to warrant it. I always ask very politely (and yes, quite quietly - its no-one else's business but my own) if they could possibly put whatever it is in a box or some foil and I've never had anyone refuse or even look at me in surprise. Pizza Express staff generally offer as they do in Carluccios, Frankie & Benny's, Tootsies and most american-diner style places.

I've also found that eating out with my mother, who has a very small appetite but likes to try things, almost always brings offers of a box to take the remainder home wherever we eat whether the local italian or some upmarket London restaurants.

I can see that people might be embarrassed to ask but it you do it politely and quietly I cannot see that anyone will mind - you're about to leave the restaurant anyway!

  • Hopeless at eating out so always ask for what's left to be wrapped up. Recently had a set of three foil swans gracing the table with my food in at one smart restaurant. On another day the food was foil wrapped in a duck shape! No embarrassment at all and relieved to hear that I'm not the only one who asks.
  • I think the doggy bag is a superb idea and we should not be embarrassed about asking for one or try to sneak it into containers when the waiter isn't looking. Heres the reason.....its YOUR food and you have paid for it!!!!

I asked to take an un-touched vegetarian lasagna (given to daughter as she is vegetarian) home from a Toby Carvery and had to sign a contract to say I accepted all responsibility if I got ill!
