More and more restaurants are refusing to let you take food remnants away now quoting Health and Safety rules.
  • Which H&S rule would be breached by taking home food that has been paid for?

Maybe if they refuse to let you take your food home, you can offer to only pay for what you have eaten.

As I am not an lardy butted Yank, I would never stoop so low to ask for a "doggy bag", Its just not done in Blighty.

My sisters, mum and I went for a champagne afternoon tea at Blenheim Palace on Saturday - we had two cake stands full of sandwiches, scones, cakes and pastries.

We asked for a bag for to take the uneaten cakes back for my dad - three big pieces of fruit cake, 4 smaller cakes and a few sandwiches - and the waitress said I've got some boxes - and she came back with everything in individual plastic boxes!
She wasnt a bit fazed by us asking and we didnt feel embarrassed at all and dad was happy with his share.

As others have said you've already paid for it - and as it was a "set" thing it wasnt as if we had ordered more than we could have eaten anyway.

I have asked for doggy bags, when we had a dog and meat was left, but began being told that it was no longer allowed, due to health and safety rules. Was I being fobbed off?

I asked for a doggy bag just last week in Frankie and Benny's. It was a gorgeous rissotto but I was just too full to finish it! They happily boxed it up for me, even offering to box up my left over salad too. I don't see why food I have paid for should be thrown in the bin when it can be eaten for lunch the next day!
I even asked if I could have a free balloon for my 4-yr-old daughter who wasn't with us at the restaurant and the waiter was more than happy to bring one!
I even noticed that after I had asked for a doggy bag, the couple at the next table did the same. I wonder if they'd have done it if they hadn't seen me doing it.

Also, I don't see why the health and safety issues come into it. Why is it any different to someone buying a take away and eating it later?
I'm so sorry if you were enjoying this thread and mine is the last post!!

I seem to have a nasty habit of killing threads!

  • In South Africa you pretty much always ask for the doggy bag. You almost always get asked by the waiter if you want to take what's leftover home.

Here in England it doesn't happen. I've been given funny looks both by staff and people I dining with when I do.

I always do at the local Indian. If the meal has cost £30 odd quid and you leave half, thats £10/£15 worth. You wouldn't leave that cash behind on the table would you. I always think that curry is nice the next day. Would defo recommend curry sandwiches in your pack-up!
  •  Anyone tried to get a Doggy Bag at a Harvester restaurant? I asked and was told they were not allowed to give Doggy Bags because of "Health & Safety". Anyone else had this reply?
  • Hi all - my first post!!
    - what's the worst that can happen?
I asked for a doggy bag in a mexican restaurant a few years ago, and the waitress scooped up all the half eaten rib bones from other diners tables and bagged them up for me!! I went home with about 50 - yuk! :rotfl:
