Hmmm, doggy bags - a sore point.
I only actually clicked a while ago what "doggy bag" actually meant. When I was younger I was a waitress in a big hotel, and I got asked quite a few times for a doggy bag. So me being the kind hearted person I was went into the kitchen and dug around in the "slops bin" (all the scraps off the plates which used to go to a local farmer) to get any bits of meat I could find.

So I'd give a large tin foil parcel to the customer, saying "I put a bit extra in for you" thinking their dog would be eating like a king that night, on all varieties of meats, including bits of other people's left over veg, gravy, soup, trifle, cakes...

Hope I didn't give anyone the trots!!

That is sooooo funny!! Would've loved to have seen their faces when they got it home. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
  • I don't ask for doggy bags but try to remember to take bag with me. I can never finish meals.

    I've been Money Tipped!
On the rare occasions we eat out (I'm too good a cook!) I always ask for the leftovers but I never, never, ever, eat them myself. They do get fed to the dogs,or the cat, or the neighbour's hens.

Why? Because over the years, in a variety of make-ends-meet jobs, I've seen too many bar and waiting staff spit in or otherwise contaminate food or drinks!! especially if one of your party is too loud and close-to-offensive or you don't look as though you are the sort to leave a generous tip.

I havent done it before, as i tend to order just the right amount.
I would ask for one if i was in a chinese , indian or italian.
Any where else i would feel it would be out of place.
I use to work in a chinese as a waitress, and i wouls say about 30% ask for a doggy bag mainly due to the large portaions we served.
Why should we putting good food down the bin.
But i wouldnt take any thing back with me if i knew i would not eat it.
A smile and manners doesnt cost any thing

So you think they'd only do this to you after you finished eating?

  • We have to ask for a dooggy bag or our dog will not let us back into the house when we return
  • I've paid for it so I take it home.

Most of the time, I don't order more than I can eat. However, there is one place I love going. I always order the cheese ploughmans, and it comes with big chunks of about 6 different cheeses. I adore cheese, but there is no way I can possibly finish it. They are quite used to wrapping up the leftovers in tinfoil for me, and it makes great lunch the next couple of days! (goes off to raid the fridge of the most recent cheese leftovers.... )
