Everywhere I've eaten in America or Canada has given us a doggybag, or made the offer, including some very 'upmarket' places. Sometimes we take it, sometimes not. I've never thought to ask here as don't tend to leave enough to make it worthwhile...:o I wouldn't be embarrassed to ask though if I wanted to.

There seems to be a policy at work (Hotel) to put people off doggy bags for food hygiene reasons..there's concerns about cooked foods being kept at temperatures suitable for food poisoning conditions(roomtemp) to take place, and there's no way of knowing how long the bag could be sitting around then travelling by car before getting it home, and then eaten,so there is a small risk..It's rare that We'd get someone would ask, anyway,as mostly the plates are cleared-if somebody wants to take some home,as they say for the cat or dog, that's fine by Me! (just, please don't complain when the 3 day old leftovers bite back!)

My wife owns a Thai restaurant and I'm surprised at how people are embarrassed or sneak food out. As far as we are concerned we would much prefer you to take any food you over ordered home with you and occasionally we offer a doggy bag if customers have ordered too much and can't finish. People do very rarely ask. It's a shame because you have paid for it and its no good to see food left and thrown away.

My little boy went out for a friends birthday last week and returned with his pizza in a box.

I was so proud of him for asking for it and not wasting his food.

Chip off the old block. I'd always ask for a doggy bag if there was a significant enough amount of leftovers (but there ususally isn't :o)

  • The childers bought us a wedding anniversary treat - afternoon tea at The Savoy.
Enjoyed that - liked the scones so much, asked for a doggy bag and they were inordinately obliging!

Don't usually ask for a 'doggie bag' (or in my case - a catty bag) - just wrap up the scraps of meat in a serviette, but if I didn't have a serviette, or there was too much, then yes, I would. My church goes out for Christmas Dinner every year to a carvery, and one couple on my table asked for a doggie bag to take the leftovers home to their very large dog! The restaurant were happy to provide something for them. And why not? After all, you have paid for it.

As someone else said, in the USA it is done automatically - some places actually have these boxes, and the waiting staff take your plate away and bring the left overs back in the box for you (often without being asked).

Went to TGIs once and my missus came down ill after the starters (nothing to do with the food, I'll add) - they boxed up our main courses for us so we could take them home...I think that's probably the only time I've ever had one though (I have no problems eating what's in front of me most of the time ;))
