    Positive outcome..

So many people forget their MOT's and shouldn't be judgemental - trying to think of a positive way to help folk to remember. Had a customer today, who had put a note on their fridge a year ago - but after awhile you don't 'see' it anymore.

How do others remember? (I'm under 3 years old, lucky me, but there will come a time - and I'm fortunate cos work at a garage..)

By your own admission you only check the tyres once a week and the rest checked every six months for you.

Of course lights and tyres should really never be a cause of MOT failure, the are so obvious, but a CV gaiter can be cut by debris, brake pipes damaged by an off road excursion etc etc, and remember often more than one person drives a car and not everyone treats them with the same respect.
Also regs change. I look after quite a few cars for family and friends and one instance that spring to mind is that if fixing CV gaitors in place. For years a couple of tywraps were supplied with a replacement kit, now they supply metal clips similar to the originals. I had a car fail that I'd done the CV joint on 3 years earlier do to this issue.

What I'm saying is you can never say never.;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Can't say I agree with you there. The fact that an MOT only guarantees the car is safe at the time it is tested gives a clue that what is perfectly good one day may fail the next, do you inspect/maintain your car everyday? I don't think so.

My lorry gets checked every single day, sometimes more than once. My car every week.

I wonder if there could be a method used to help people remember. Wouldn't it be a good idea if there was something like a sticker with the MOT logo on that had the date on it which came with the certificate so you could peel it off and place in a prominent position so you'd have a reminder. Something that you could affix to the inside of the windscreen possibly....

Hmmm - yes Conor, but that is my point....

You get it, stick it somewhere (don't tempt me :D ) but after a while, you don't 'see' it anymore.

I have in the past organised my tax, service and MOT for the same time, so none are forgotten..

Just wondering if there is another way to help folk remember..

We had one customer, that was a whole YEAR late... and they never noticed til we pointed it out...

Of course lorries should be checked daily, look at the risk.;)

Tyres lights, once a week, I'm sure "most" of us, or at least the sensible ones do that. But in spite of that it is still possible for a serious fault to be present that without jacking the car up, and taking the weight of the suspension, won't be spotted:o Which is why we have the MOT

I cannot believe the pompous people who act as if they never make a mistake and suggest a big fine! How petty can you get. The orignal poster's daughter had forgotten her MOT by a week, but there are thousands driving out there with no tax, no insurance, forged or no MOT's etc, etc. Why is it we get reminders for Vehicle Excise Duty, inundated by insurance company reminders, but nothing about our MOT's. I too have forgotten in the past, but my local garage are now issuing reminders, thank goodness. I am pretty sure that your insurance would be invalidated if you had a claim while you had no MOT, as others have pointed out. I think the plod should have given her a caution. Also I heard recently that it is going out to 2 years between retests, anyone else heard this?

This is an urban myth. A lack of valid MOT alone will not invalidate a motor insurance policy.
