Driving with expired MOT !!!

I'm pretty sure your insurance is invalid if your tax and or mot is not up to scratch so the OPs daughter has probably got off lightly.0

The way i see it is if you have your own car you take all the responsibility of getting teh tax sorted out on time, the insurance renewed on time and the mot done on time, to be honest its simple,
yes people do forget, if she cant remember when any of them are due then maybe she ought to write it down eg 1 month until tax runs out or 6 weeks until insurance runs out, at least this way you have a period of time to get a renewal quote or get a new quote from insurerNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -

No it's not. That's a myth, go and read the t+c of your insurance cover, it will probably not mention MOT just that the vehicle is roadworthy.
The mot just states that on that date and time, it passed a series of tests, it can be unroadworthy seconds later0 -

This is true, but I think an insurance company would probably rightly argue that if it has no MOT then presumably it is unroadworthy - as thy will try anything to get out of paying.
I know my car is unroadworthy at the moment and do not drive it as I know it needs new rear cylinders, shoes, the brakes bleeding and checking for any leaks and operation checked and new rear shock absorbers (due to knackered bottom rubber bush on one side). Just need the time to do the work. Despite having an MOT that it only just passed a few months ago.0 -

No, they will argue that it's value will be diminished if it has no MOT. But they cannot say it was unroadworthy, they'd need proof of something dangerous for that to stick.
Plus a very few insurance Co's do say the vehicle requires an MOT - except where appropriate. Even this might be challenged successfully by the policy holder.0 -
Yes I do, but AFAICS OP was not passing the buck, merely asking what to expect.
Not very clever either, if you need work done it can cause problems with the tax renewal.
I think the best thing is to have MOT shortly after Insurance, so you are reminded by the insurance and have those two significantly far away from the tax renewal, so it doesn't all hit the bank in the same quarter.
Why would you need work done? unless you never have your vehicle checked other than that one day a year? A Vehicle should NEVER fail an MOT unless it's not been maintained. It's not exactly a rigorous examination.
People who failtlMOT's due to Defective lights/tyres etc should be reported.

Can't say I agree with you there. The fact that an MOT only guarantees the car is safe at the time it is tested gives a clue that what is perfectly good one day may fail the next, do you inspect/maintain your car everyday? I don't think so.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

You don't agree if you take a car in and it fails on worn tyres? Worn brakes? worn wipers? duff bulbs? Poor Handbrake? Worn bearings.
MOT's are just cosmetic, one is not allowed to physically remove anything to check the vehicle they don't have much punch really so you should easily pass.
My vehicle checks it's own bulbs, but if it didn't I would.
I check the tyres once a week thoroughly when I wash the car.
Brake pads/rotors once a month.
Wipers replace when necessary.
Also have a 6 mth service - which is not a service as such more a health check for £10 which covers the underside steering rack etc that I can't access too readily.
Many many people don't do any of this and a lot of vehicles not road worthy when they go for their MOT - as I said it should always pass.
Or are you one of those who just jump in and drive off? Some scroat could have slackened your wheel nuts over night, slashed a tyre. etc etc.
The majority have been driving around on illegal tyres for 6 months. Scary.

Many thanks for all the positive and helpful replies.
She had the MOT done this morning and took the paperwork to the local police station this afternoon. Looks like she'll get a £40 fine but no points.0
