Rang A & L today. You can open an account on the internet on Monday, subject to credit reference checks being made. You can also do it on the phone. Past experience has told me that if you apply on the internet, if your application gets lost, basically, you don't have a reference number you can get back to them on. However, the woman on the phone advised me that if you apply on the phone, they give you a reference number there and then, so I think I will be choosing that route.

Very interesting all this. I'm considering opening a direct whatever account and one of these saving accounts and transfering the money in each month.

I'm going to have to draw a diagram of my financial operations soon; it's getting complicated. Good fun though.

Yes, it could get complicated, but as you say, it's good fun as well. What I do is at the end of every month, I take stock of my month-end financial position (draw out balance sheet and P&L for my personal finances and share it with the missus), and also draw a timeline for activities for the next month (dates for funding an account for a direct debit, paying bills where I haven't a direct debit in place, fixed deposit maturities, regular saver maturities, etc) I also take into account the banking holidays, and put these down on Outlook as scheduled tasks, so I cannot miss them. The whole thing takes an hour or so, but it ensures that I prevent the eventuality of the bank relieving me of some hard-earned money (and some not-so-hard-earned stoozing income ;-)

This has already been asked on this thread. See post 29 above.

I think you get £25 if you open over the net. You may also get if you open by phone. It's worth you checking this out.

Just had a look on A&L website and don't see anything about £25 sign up.

However you can get £10 cashback via Linemypockets

Where do you actually find this on the site?

You get £50 each when you recommend a friend or family to open a current account.

    http://www.alliance-leicester.co.uk/currentaccounts/index.asp?page=recommend-friend&ct=curraccmenu

The form says that it should be filled in by both parties and posted to A&L, but I might see if my dad can just take it into a branch and open the regular saver at the same time.

(let me know if anyone wants me to fill in half of their form for them :) .. the left half)

Edit: Re-read the form and noticed that it can (and should) be sent after the new account is opened (unorthodox and could be a costly mistake for A&L), so anyone who's already opened an account, should definitely find someone to act as referrer so that they can both claim the free £50.

I was probably one of the first on Monday morning to request a Premier Direct account along with the new 10% regular saver by phone. Also decided to apply for one of their credit cards at the same time (despite the £50 max fee) - since they would be doing a credit search anyway to open up the savings accounts, I guessed a search would cover all accounts. Did it over the phone, that way you get a reference number in case there's a query. Past experience has shown that online applications, quick as they are when they work, sometimes go astray, and then you don't know whether to reapply or what has or hasn't been registered.

So, paperwork arrived today. You have to fill in the Blue forms and keep the White. The Blue only mentions the Premier Direct Account and a Plus Saver account (which I hadn't asked for). No mention of the Regular Saver. So I rang quoting my reference number, which got a quick response. They rang me back about an hour later when the "team" had checked the query. Apparently you are automatically given a Plus Saver account, and more importantly in the first instance you are not sent any paperwork for the Regular Saver, but I was assured that my verbal application was sitting there on their screen with the £250 request that I wanted to pay in monthly. More will happen when my paperwork is signed and returned and then at that stage, obviously they will send account nos. etc.

I've looked but cannot find it. Maybe it is no longer the case. It was when I opened an account. It may be worth checking over the phone if you apply.
