I'll be keeping an interested eye on this thread as I've never had a lot of luck with freezing cream personally - it always splits and goes unpleasantly grainy. :( I hope someone will be able to give you (and me ;)) some advice on how to stop that happening.

I find it needs to be whipped first, if you freeze double cream as is it can go grainy.

I was always told to whip double/whipping cream first and it always used to be fine. Rarely have cream these days so not needed to freeze any for a while...

  • Freeze it in ice cube trays or ice cube bags then add still frozen to soup you are heating on the hob.

whip before freezing for best results. If you are going to use for decorating trifles etc pipe swirls on waxed paper open freeze then bag up to store then you can take out and use as required

Freezing may not be your only option...don't underestimate how long an opened but covered pot will last in the fridge.

I bought a 600ml pot for just 39p 2 weeks ago, and used about 1/3 in a dessert dish for 5, another 150ml to serve...and have been pouring a couple of tablespoons to my yoghurt daily (new favourite treat :D). It's still as fresh as a daisy.

I can't wait to see some whoopsied cream as I really want to make butter with it. I am another one who has tried freezing whipped cream before and it's fine to use it for soup or whatever, but it's never that great I think.
Use it to make butter in the FP. Takes just minutes and you can freeze it.

    Hi mrs lds,

I regularly freeze cream for using in cooking rather than using by itself. As others have said it needs to be whipped first. Single cream doesn't freeze well at all.

As your thread has dropped down the board I've added it to our main one on freezing cream where you'll find more advice.

If you fancy making butter, this thread should help:

    Making my own butter! (merged)

There are all sorts of items in the Cooking section of the MEGA Index sticky listed under freezing - and cream and eggs are both in there to read about.

    :)

Just got to this old thread via Google and wondering what 'the Cooking section of the MEGA Index sticky' means? Apologies if it is obvious but I can't find any sections on the website with those headings from a brief browse...
