    Hi all

Drive-by posting in middle of various things, sorry it's short!

Don't want to think about the Prince Harry thing thank you. James Martin, however...

    Welcome newbies :hello:

Re DF stuff... Redid my SOA on the weekend after deciding to give myself some leeway - that way I can celebrate and get more motivated when I pay off extra, instead of feeling bad if I don't make the targets I set myself and getting fed up with the whole thing. Hence new DFD. Also decided that overdraft is top priority, since when I rang u to check the rate it's nearly as much as CC1 (only CC not on 0%). And have just got a bit scared looking at the current accounts board and realising that an overdraft can be recalled without notice, which apparently they can't do with a card or loan. Have two work mileage claims coming in, which should get me a bit extra next month, and realised I can get my eye test repaid by work... bit concerned I am getting a reputation as the person who actually reads the HR policies...

Not much going in my life otherwise, I hope the rest of you are having a more exciting week!

I get paid on Friday and really want to make this payday the start of NOT using my CCs or buying needless rubbish.
I'm a real magazine addict and apart from one magazine (which I have on subscription), I want to get to Feb's payday without having bought any magazines or chocolate. Plus I plan to take lunch to work as I can easily spend £5 a day on coffees and lunch.
How do you girls stick to your plans? Do you have anything particular that works for you - any tips or tricks or motivation?
Any suggestions gratefully received to keep my spirits up!

    Thanks x

  • Hi Jenevieve

Taking lunch in really helps me - it saves on the extras I'd end up buying if I went to the shops as well as the food itself. Even buying really nice soup and bread in Waitrose for the week works out cheaper (and nicer) than wildly overpriced sandwiches from the van or Tesco's. If you have a staffroom or somewhere 'else' you can go to eat then you could take a book and have a proper break - then it feels like you've escaped your desk even if you don't leave the building.

Some magazines also have a website, so you might be able to read quite a bit of the content online. Or you can get a gossip fix from a website, it depends what features you'd miss most. Or raid the library for books instead.

I am probably a very bad example re. chocolate - I eat shedloads of it but only the expensive stuff because once I'd got used to Green & Blacks or Lindt I can't bear the cheap stuff any more! It just tastes like sugared lard to me! Keeps me out of the newsagents as I stock up in the supermarket instead, but probably doesn't save money overall.

Good luck, let us know how you get on...

Hi jenevieve, am not great at being motivated, but what about joining the sealed pot challenge thread, then every time you avoid a magazine/chocolate/expensive lunch you could put the money you save into the pot. I have a huge piggy which is filling up nicely and is going towards an expensive handbag. :D

I agree about the coffee/lunch thing, am never organised enough to take things with me, am going to try though as it is an expensive habit. Don't think I will manage to take a prepared lunch, I have tried this and kept leaving it in the fridge:rolleyes: so it was actually a waste of money. What I am going to do is keep snack type things in my car, crisps, cans of pop etc, so that I don't waste money in the vending machine.

    Hey Jenevieve,

I'me the same, lunches end up costing so much.... I try and meal plan at the beginning of the week and make soup or something to take into work. If I've done the shopping I can normally make something to take in. I always end up spending more on bits and bobs.

I don't buy mags much anymore. I get Elle on subscription and if I'm going on a long journey I might get one. I tend to grab the freebie newspapers on the train / bus and I do head to the library and get a library book.

There are lots of articles on the net, I love checking out the newspaper sites for good articles from their weekend supplements, guardian, independent etc etc

I can get the radio on my phone and so I listen to the radio on my phone while travelling rather than reading something.

Another idea I just had is that Quidco have got a free trial of Audible.com at the moment (I think) and you can get a free download of an audio book. That might be a fun thing to try???

Good luck and I totally know where you are coming from, I'm the worst for spending a fiver and then having nothing to account for it!
I've got my own flat :j:j

Now I have to pay the bills

And feed my interiors addiction ;)

Rah I've failed again... was invited out for dinner last night (very cheap, $10 all in!) but that meant that the chicken casserole I prepared is still sitting in the firdge.... it needs at least a couple of hours to cook but I havent been in my flat long enough to do it! Knowing my luck it'll be all skanky by the time I get back tonight. Also means I'm buying lunch again today :(

    Hey TDQO,

what you need is a slowcooker - check out the old style board for advice on what type, I keep meaning to buy one... but hate buying things that arent pretty or dont smell pretty ;)

TDQO - If it needs a couple of hours & you get home roughly the same time each night, can't you use the timer on your oven ?

Or is that a bit hi-tec for Australia :rotfl:
