  • What about gluten free bread in the bread maker? I have eaten very little bread since I found out I couldn`t have gluten. Have had the shop bought stuff ready made, and it was so horrible decided to do with out. You can buy mixes to do in an oven, but £2 per loaf is a bit steep.
    Any ideas?

swizzlebabe, found THIS info for you. It does appear that you can do it, but have to buy the prescription flour.Recipe book available on the subject too!!

I have the Kenwood bm and I get really good results! (its the bm
200 fastbake, it was around £87 a couple of years ago)

I've been thinking of getting the panasonic as its got good reviews, but really, mine does very good bread so no point, its just that im a gadget freak and cant bear not having the best :-/

I dont keep to the original recipe though, for instance, today im doing a bread where i've substituted an egg in place of some of the water, i added no milk powder and only one spoon of salt and 1 and half spoons of sugar. Plus the one and half yeast with 450g breadmaking flour. The bread is nearly done and has risen almost to the top of the lid and as its a recipe ive done before, I know it will be soft and fluffy.

Are you using breadmaking flour or value flour? I've not tried value but could that make a difference? Is it just the taste you dont like or is the bread not coming out as expected?

    Hiya,

My DH doesnt eat wheat either so I bought a bag of Doves Farm Organic Dtrong White Flour and made the BM recipe on the packet. I made one 2lb loaf and have only got a 3rd of the bag of flour left!! It also used about 3 eggs and I think probably worked out at about £2 for the homemade loaf too. And I have to say... we really didnt feel it was worth it. It was extremely heavy (not my bm skills either!!) and had very little taste. DH said it was nice enough, but wouldnt moan if I didnt make it regularly.

He buys rye bread and sunflower bread from Aldi for 69p (I think) a packet, which he really enjoys. Personally I find them too strong flavoured, but they might be an option for you.

PS - forgot to say - the bag of flour itself (1kg bag) cost somewhere in the region of £1.97.  I only paid 51p for a 1.5kg bag of ordinary white flour from Tescos.
I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are – Milton Berle

I used BM flour, but it's both the taste and texture I don't like. Ah well, something are just not meant to be, I'm glad though I didn't buy one of my own, I would now be consigning it to the cupboard otherwise!!

What a shame though, never mind, everyone likes different things, I bet your scones are good :-)

Well, I have my first ever loaf in the BM - half an hour to go. Am feeling excited and apprehensive in equal measures  Excited because it smells good so far, but a bit apprehensive because the quantities given in the Panasonic book bore very little relation to the quantities given on the yeast packet - I was expecting the proportions to be the same  Anyway, I followed the Panasonic recipe religiously except for fractionally reducing the water, as a couple of posters have said the recipe works better with 20ml less. Have made a pan of butternut squash and parsnip soup to go with the bread - well I know that's OK because I've just had a taste :p so hope the bread lives up to it (Otherwise I'll never hear the end of it from OH!)

We seem to be developing a habit of having a 'beans on toast' night since getting the BM. We're enjoying the bread so much that a netto tin of beans and some chilli powder on it seems like a fine meal to us!

Okay, we're also having fruit crumble after it and we don't normally have pudding but it's still a cheap meal!
