Download Speed Issue???

Options
I've downloaded 3 or 4 things this evening with each one taking 3-5 minutes and my d/l speed has been 315 kb/sec which surprises me as my internet connection is only 2mb and i've never seen it go any higher than about 225 kb/sec consistently

I've done a speed test on the web and the results are:

Download Speed 2770 kb/s

Upload Speed 319 kb/s

Now, i'm no expert at these speeds and what they mean, but why with my 2 mb connection have I suddenly noticed a near 100 kb/sec increase in performance?

Is there anything I need to be worried about and/or any tests I should do?

Thanks

Why would you be worried about an increase in speed? :)

There are a few possibilities depending on why you were on a 2 Mb line before - was it limited to 2Mb or was 2Mb it's limit if you see what I mean... it all depends on what the line can/could physically carry.

My line performance has just improved because BT replaced a lot of the cabling between the green box and the exchange (sometimes working for a large ISP can be very handy...) as the cable had seriously degraded and we were getting a lot of drops in service.

But if your line was already capable of more than 2Mb and it was just limited to a 2Mb profile then it's possible a mass upgrade has taken place. That doesn't mean you pay more, just that they have upgraded all the line profiles fitting a certain criteria :)

Oh i'm not worried as in complaining, just wondered what the cause was :) I just don't want to find out AOL have upgraded me and my fees without telling me :o

I pay for a 2MB connection so was rather shocked when it was going faster for a fair few files. At one stage it was at 567 kb at the beginning of the d/l before dropping rapidly and stabilising around 315 kb when i'm used to not much more than 225kb

Would be nice to have a free upgrade though :p Although I have heard nothing saying I was getting one :o

As long as it doesn't mean it's an accurate reading and I have a virus :o

I'll d/l another file and see what happens.

Use this for checking your line http://speedtester.bt.com/ this will give the line sync and down and up speeds i could not get this to work on Firefox so use on IE Browser

Just carried out the test and I'm on Virgin at 8MB this is a typical result for my location and i live 1/2 mile from the exchange.
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: help.jpg -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2469 kbps

C_Ronaldo - It's AOL like I say and they have been moving people across to the new network, but as I am capped by AOL at 2mb, I didn't think I would see a higher speed.

malamute - running that test page now - not sure it's working on IE as it's blank at the moment, although PC is doing something, so i'm hoping it's taking it's time only...
