    I'm getting tired of AVG lately. I'm still on 7.5 because I'm seriously considering moving to a different one. For years it worked without giving me a single false positive but recently I keep getting them.
    Most recently it broke Notepad++

    You could always try AVG 8, but I hear it's not without its fair share of problems.

    I know some people who have been using it without any problems though.

    I also had two trojans on my computer yesterday. I only use it for info via web and on -line banking. I use Avast and run it about three time a year. Did a full scan when given warning of this virus and placed it in the chest. As i have not got a clue what i am really doing, my question is, am I now ok? Should i take any more steps to prevent reinfection? Have I done everything and shoud i run a scan more often now? Any advise would be appreciated.

    The first worm appeared two years ago for OS X as a proof of concept, and the user has to explicitly download, install, and then run it (which involves entering the administrator's password).

    This is why OS X is more secure than Windows:

    I know someone who used to run Norton on his Mac. To be honest, I'd rather have a virus. :p

    You're half right. Problem is that Macs (BSD, not quite Unix) are less subsceptible to damage by a virus for the same reason Linux is, because of file permissions and a more rigid permission model.

    The truth is though that a user space virus can still attack everything _you_ have permission to, i.e. all your personal files and documents.

    There aren't many viruses for Mac OS X (and even less for Linux) but they do exist.

    On my machines (all Linux) I use ClamAV if I use antivirus at all, which I don't.

    Granted, I dont check for viruses but like Marty says anti-virus stuff is worse than the viruses themselves ;)

    Depends on the anti virus surely. Things like Norton, McAfee etc are resource hogs and awful apps. But you can't tar everything with the same brush. Think I've already mentioned my entire security suite is not even noticeable and takes up less memory than my keyboard profile app!

    Forgive my laziness at not finding the previous post, what system do you use then?

    I found one of the most impressive things about it was the firewall. Completely unobtrusive. Tiny footprint and doesn't continually nag you every time you install something etc.
