Buy a Spanish SIM card when you get there. You will be able to use it in your UK phone if it has been unlocked. There are several networks, including Telefonica, Amena and Vodafone available there.
What we have done is taken an old Nokia phone (from before we upgraded) and used the unlock code on another thread. It works fine, and is much cheaper than our UK network provider.0 -
There is already quite a bit about Spain on here - do a Search -
Apart from just direct dialling international from a Spanish SIM ...
You may be able to find a calling card to use with freephone numbers on the Spanish networks, though some may be blocked. There are other calling cards and callthrough operations with 902 or 912 numbers.
Details of Spanish networks, tariffs (several options each), links, etc
http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/spain.html
All have €0.12 per minute tariff options after 4pm - useful if you call family more than work - check out the various favourite number options, and think about nominating the calling card number as one. If they won't accept 912 as favourite number, look at the American calling card Bizon, with a Madrid code.
For calls earlier in the day, you could use a separate callback service at about 15p/min.

I just found another MSE post which pointed to
http://www.spainsim.com/vodmovicallcards.htm
- the Eurodirect card looks interesting if you can call from landlines - from 2c per minute via a freephone number. And the site has SIM offers as well.0 -
If you have one of the cheap call shacks near you, then they are cheap for call from Spain to the UK. Most of the big supermarkets do cheap SIM only deals.
As has been said here take an unlocked handset with you the Nokias are simple to unlock just using the free web sites listed one MSE.
An option that is cheaper than the call shacks (small shops that offer cal l cheap) and cheap internet etc is to check to see if you have broadband.
I used this to call the UK for free using the 18866 / 1899 service cheap VOIP you need to put a £5 credit to use the system. I used my laptop and free internet in the hotel. Cheapheadset with Microphone from £2 from ebuyer.
If the person in the UK has broadband then Googletalk or Skype might be worth a look. Googletalk has the best sound quality: Better than any phone!
Don't go for these web sites that sell you a Spanish SIM card for £50!
You can buy one cheap in Spain with credit already applied.
There is thread on the grabit board for cheap Nokia 6030 on o2 for £29.99Seth.0 -
I have bought spanish sims from here

I then usually get family to call me back with one of numbers from martins call checker.
They can call you for 7p a minute

do you already have a Spanish SIM - if not see
http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/spain.html
There are cheap favourite numbers on each network, and Vodafone has a new 60 for 1 minutes option. Use any of these with a calling card local access number such as Bizon which costs another just over 1p per minute to call UK landlines.0 -
Hi
Sorry if asked before but i'm new here and couldn't see search.
When in Spain I use a Spanish Vodafone SIM card to call home. Last time I went I saw an advert for dialling 902 902 952 before all calls to get a cheap rate.
My question is are there any other access numbers which would give me cheaper calls from spain to the UK using my Spanish mobile SIM?
Thanks...0 -
You could use a calling card with either freephone or ordinary landline access for as little as 2c per minute over the Vodafone tariff. Also, I believe there are various favourite number and similar options on Vodafone, such as 60 for 1 minute offer.
There are search functions in the 2 beige coloured header bars at the top. If you load the Mobiles board page, then search this forum, enter spain, and there are some other threads0 -
we are going to costa brava next week for 10 days and i would like to use my mobile phone there for making local calls in spain. my handset is nokia 6280 on 3 network and the call costs if i will use 3 network are rediculous. i would like to ask 2 questions please:
1- will i be better buying spanish sim card when i arrive there? and will find them at gerona airport?
2- do i need to unlock the nokia 6280? and is it easy?
any advice will be much appreciated.0 -
Not sure about the sim card sorry. But I do know you'll need an unlocked phone to use a sim abroad and there's no way of unlocking the 6280 as of yet.Sigless0
