Nothing a couple of phone calls but no one has been to see him.

His absess is healing though it has been a nasty one. I rode him round the village a couple of times at the weekend (just walk) and he seemed ok.

I got my vet bill through yesterday £140  i suppose it could be worse.

I havnt done any active searching for a home for him as my OH moved out last weekend so i have had enough to cope with the childen, Uni, placements etc.

  • The vet has just been to see Jim,

He was sound on hard ground on a circle on both reins however he was lame on his off fore when on a soft surface.
The vet looked at where his absess was and found it has not properly healed yet. He blocked that part of the foot and we trotted him in the school again on the circle and this time he was totally sound.
The vet said that the absess just needed some more time to heal. He advised me to put a wet poultice on tonight, then a dry poultice tomorrow and keep it covered and dry untill it has healed.
He feels that he is suitable for loaning out as a hack (he even said he would keep a look out for somewhere for him).
He does not think euthenasia is an option. He said he doesnt see many horses of his age as sound as he is on the hard ground on a circle.

So ths is good news i just have to get the absess totally clear then carry on with looking for a new home for him.

Have just seen your thread, I know absolutely nothing about horses, so have no suggestions, but I know how terrible I'd feel if I had to give up one of my dogs.

I hope you find something for him, in the meantime ((((hugs))))

I think you are very brave looking for a home for such a well loved horse. I hope you find him one soon and that he will be very happy there.

I have a horse (one of the reasons it is taking so long to clear my debts!) so I know just how much you love him. xx

Sorry i havnt updated for a while
but with OH moving out, placements and UNi and the children to sort out its been a tough few weeks.

Jim has not yet recovered from this foot absess yet i have spoken to the vet at the weekend and he came out today. Jim had maggots in his foot on sunday which wasnt very nice i had to use diluted hydrogen peroxide to get rid of the little blighters. They havnt been back since. Today the vet has told me to just pack the holes with cotton wool soaked with cournucresine as a plug to keep any nasties out and hopefully help the foot to dry out.

The vet has told a couple of people about Jim and that he is looking for a new home so fingers crossed i hear from them

Horace thanks for the PM i will try and contact them if there is no luck from these people

  • A lady contacted me last night,

she is looking for a hack so that she can go out with the rest of her family who all have horses but her eldest has taken her horse so now she doesnt have one. She sounds very competant and i think Jim would be very lucky to go there. My vet recommended him and so this is through word of mouth they may come to collect him on 12th/ 13th september
They have 10 acres and a school and live near the beach so it sounds like he would have a good time.

His foot seems to be healing it is just taking some time so i hope it is better by then

What fantastic news - I hope she takes him and he can live the life of riley enjoying hacks along the beach. The seawater will do his legs the world of good.

Glad you got the maggots sorted out, although it may have been better to leave them there to eat the dead flesh. I can see why you got rid of them though eewww - horrid things.
