Horse to go?

Does anyone know of charities that take horses
i can not afford to keep my horse, i have had him 11 years and my circumstances have changed dramatically over the years. I tried to sell him a couple of time but due to his health reasons he did not pass the vetting.
I dont want to just sell him at a horse market that would be wrong he could end up anywhere.
It will break my heart to see him go but i dont see how i can keep paying for him even though i am keeping him on a shoe string,
stabling, hay, straw 25.00 per week shoeing 55.00 every 6 weeks
Can anyone help?

Hi,
Sorry to hear about the horse having to go, it is heart breaking (have been there and done it had more than one now have one left). My older horse went to a riding school where I can go and see him, he does a little bit of light work and just about earns his keep. Not sure if thats something you had considered.

Hi
I am so sorry to hear this, my sister had to give up her horse for the same reason.
You could try contacting Redwings Horse Sanctuary
Even if they cannot help you directly, they may be able to advise you.
This is their site:

Hi
Awww sorry to hear you are having to let the horse go, but in the long run, for him and you, its probably best.
Would it be worth phoning up local stables, seeing if they wanted him? Or possibly one of those farms or something? They may want him?
How old is he? Are his health problems because of his age? Might be worth looking into a little retirement place? Maybe contact the RSPCA, they may know of somewhere?

Thanks for your reply,
It is heartbreaking isnt it, i feel so guilty about even thinking of giving him to someone else, its like letting one of your children go
Im getting upset just thinking about it but i have to do something.
Yep he went to a college who did look after him for free but unfortunately he did get very depressed and i tried to sell him then so he could go to just one owner but he failed the vet. He has a splint just where the suspensory ligament branches so he constantly has wear and tear on it. He has thrown huge splints on the opposite front leg as well.
He is lame at the moment the vet thinks it is an absess so it has to be poulticed. (Cant wait till the vet bill comes in for this one!!)
I had many years of him being sound and competed advanced level dressage.
I wonder if a school would want him if he had these probs also i would still get vet bills. In my experience the college used to use him one lesson after the other.“most people give up just as they are about to achieve success”If you think you are going through hell keep going - Sir Winston ChurchillIf You Can't Change It, Change the Way You Think About It.SW, 13st5lb, -4 1/2, -1,(12st13.5lbs)0 -

Think I might be very lucky with the scheool near me, they do try to keep the horses all of them to a level they are comfortable at... if you gave him to the school then the vets bills would be their responsibilty but you would have little say in how he was looked after, its one of those horrible things that goes round and round in circles.
BHS approved schools are normally happier places, or small family yards.
Or maybe you could find someone that just wants a companion for a youngster or for a stallion??0 -
World Horse Welfare is the biggest charity working with horses. They might be able to offer some advice? http://www.worldhorsewelfare.org/0
