I agree Martin, I was very surprised at the poll results.
Doing Christmas shopping with my daughter a couple of years ago I found a purse with cash in that had been left in the ladies loo. I really wished I hadn't found it as the police station was about half a mile walk away and it was pouring with rain, but I handed it in.
I phoned a few weeks later and was told it had been claimed the same day...would have been nice if the owner had thanked me. I would have got no pleasure at all from anything I had bought with the "found" cash if I had kept that purse.

I was surprised by the poll too. I think I would ask around and then pocket it if no-one in the immediate area claimed it. I too wouldn't trust bar staff to necessarily do the right thing with it - I've known bar staff being sacked for fiddling and their pay isn't that good... I might tell the landlord/lady but I would hang on to it for safe keeping. :D I might hand it in to a police station if there was one next door. I once saw someone drop a tenner out of their pocket in a crowded street in front of me..... unfortunately I knew him so chased after him to give it back! I also found a pristine tenner on a deserted street once and was concerned it might be fake so quickly bought something to get the change. I might think about it being a fix or a fake, especially if it looked new (and the printing was wet :rotfl: ). I know it sounds a bit iffy and butty, it would depend on the situation and I would hope that it hadn't been dropped by someone who was skint.
    Torgwen.......... :) ...........

Here's my pricipal: if its hard 'cash', keep it as how will you be able to confidently trace it to the right owner? If its a wallet though, or anything identifiable, i'd hand it in.

You have a legal duty to hand money in. Also, did you know that if you find a wallet/purse and decide to keep it and for some reason are then stopped by the police you can be charged with theft by finding?

I'm not overly surprised at the results tbh.

Just another sign that society is slowly going down the tubes.

I wonder what the results would be if this poll was done on a cross section of ordinary peeps in the street...and not MSE'rs?

I often wonder if the original desire to benefit from bargains and good deals etc actually develops and breeds avarice in some people?

Thats right, I was just trying to keep it in context.

The thing that always concerns me though is how you can prove you were just going to the police station to hand it in or, that you would have done so at the first opportunity. Just because you still have it on you doesn't mean you intended to keep it so its quite a tricky one.

Was an item on the TV earlier this year where they asked a shop to give change for a twenty if anyone gave them a tenner - only around 5% of people said 'you've given me too much change'. They were interviewing the shoppers once they got outside - most of them regarded it as a 'bit of a bonus, innit' and didn't seem that embarrassed about being on camera...
