Tell me about shopping at Lidl's ...

  • They do fantastic raspberry 'jaffa' cakes!

Some Lidls are better than others - some in greater London are not well run and the staff are awful. Not all are like this though. (Hayes, Middx struck me as a really good one!)

Lidl save money on employing only small numbers of staff. So pick your time when visiting. I tend to go in the evening soon before they close. If you hit a busy period you can wait for ages in a queue.

Someone above said don't try and pack your shopping whilst at the checkout. I would second this. I was once cursed by a till assistant for doing this. Some places (like Morrisons) sell trolley bags which are really handy if you don't want to repack.

The non food specials can be really good. I have never been disappointed with anything I have bought.

Also, the firm I work for has done research on Lidl which suggests they are the cheapest of the discounters - combine this with generally good product quality and you're onto a winner!

  • Magentasue - advent calendars in HomeBargain at 67p each - Fimbles and Groovy Chick. Saw the same ones somewhere else at £1.99.

But back on subject, the Lidl 79p bag of iced gingerbread little cakes has almost gone. My husband thinks they're lovely. They are by fin carre, and called Pfeffernusse 500g, fein gewuzte Lebkuchen ubersogen mit weisser Glasur - only speak the Basil Fawlty type of German but I suppose it translates as: something ..... cake overlaid with white glaze !!!

Thing is, Verytrying ... my 16 year old son may not be too old for an advent calender but he is far too old for the Fimbles ;D

The stollen is, I'm pleased to say, up to standard. Might have to get another to confirm ,,, ::)

I'll be organised on Monday - penny for a trolley, trolley bags at the ready ... I saw some people today loading their shopping from trolley to boxes in car. Not for me in the rain.

I'm so glad I found this site, I've learned so much - would never have considered Lidl if I hadn't read you lot raving about it! ;D ;D

Have found Lidl products excellent since I started shopping there. Great savings. Try Mister choc caramel biscuits which have been on offer at 88p for 8. Double fingers that taste like Twix, Yummy. Husband is addicted to them.

  • Here's another cracking bargain from Lidl. They are selling quite large (200g) packs of smoked salmon for a mere £1.49!
Their normal price is also a bargain compared to other supermarkets, at £1.99.

    It tastes simply delicious.
  • 'll second Yoga Girl (Ithink) on the nappies- excellent. Huggies are undersized, but Lidl's are generous sizes and don't leak. Prob cheaper too, but I just take that for granted in there!

I picked up some barbary duck breasts today, for only 2.99. I also had a goose and some venison. Mr Sweety Pie is going to be spoilt this Christmas! :)

I went in today to look for the Salt Crystal Lamps advertised in their newspaper at £5.99 for this w/c 22 Nov, but they didn't have any in. Is that normal for them ? to advertise something they don't have in stock?
  • Sallen, this can happen. I've been told by one of the managers that sometimes they only get one or two of an item in stock ???

Have to say I don't like the fruit and veg, I prefer to get mine from the local market, it keeps better for longer especially if you are trying to buy enough to last all week.

Just my views on Lidl ;)
