Just opened an account - no need for ID, something about my other current account (not co-op/smile) and the electoral register. Spoke to a very helpful man who set the account up on the phone. A different employee told me that it doesn't matter which branch you apply to - all new applications are going though the sortcode 089300 which doesn't accept the faster payments - that's my only quarrel - seems a bit convenient that regardless of where you apply you wont be able to use the faster payment service.
As it's only for a few months it doesn't really matter.
The guy that set up my account also said that the £100 would be in my account after 2 months so I guess it's just a case of wait and see when it turns up. The T&Cs do say 3 months though - would they have any right to reclaim that money if they did pay after 2 and I didnt pay in the final £800?
Everyone needs a volume control -
When you shout every day and make everthing a catastrophe,
no one will hear you when you need to say something really important.

I would say yes - make your 3 deposits.
You've never seen me, but I've been here all along - watching and learning...
  • Just opened 2 accounts at the local branch (myself and the wife), over the phone and no mention of having to switch current accounts or DD etc. They did ask for current account sort code and account number, but said that was just for identification purposes.

    Hello £200 (in 3 months) :T

Went to the branch today and halfway through the application she told me that for reasons unknown, the 'system' was only offering me the Current Account, not the Current Account Plus. She spoke to her manager, came back and said that they would appeal, but needed my last three bank statements, instead of just the one that I brought it. I'm posting the other two to her.

So anyone popping into a branch to open this should bring three bank statements with them, just in case.

I haven't a clue why I've not been offered the Plus account - I have current accounts with Nationwide, Halifax, Natwest and Lloyds and have always been approved with no major problems.

Perhaps that is why (though if it is, then I have no chance ).

Speaking of Smile above, does anyone know if you ever get off their system to qualify as a new customer again like A&L, or are they like FD who never delete your details (took up their wine offer quite a few years ago, nice wine by all accounts  so if the opportunity arose again ...)

  • Hi

I don't know about the Smile customers being eligible. I'm going to my branch on Friday and I'll try and remember to ask. Or you could give your branch a ring to check.

I don't see it in the T+C on the flyer I got, it only says "this offer excludes existing Co-operative Bank current account, Cashminder, Priviledge and Priviledge Premier current account customers". No mention of Smile so maybe you can get it.

  • Oh and if your on the electoral register they probably won't need ID, but always worth taking it along just in case. Passports, driving licences etc.

I did mine on the phone and no ID was required.

Nice one ! , just signed up my wife and I using National number 08457 212212
Asked for local branch for the CURRENT ACCOUNT PLUS WITH THE £100 BONUS. Said she could do it for me. No ID required took 10 minutes.
Hope this info helps anyone else Thanks to OP.
Control is an illusion, chaos is the reality. A successful warrior dances with chaos, and success means simply that one is still alive.

    Thanks.

Phoned them this morning, using the number above.
They took my name and number and called me later at work.

    After a 10 minute call, I was approved. :T

I'll be switching my household bill account to them, as we're fed up with Abbey.
As we deposit £1750 into the Abbey account each month, we'll definitely get the £100 bonus.

Chased up my £100 today with the call centre because I was told it'd be paid within a month of account opening.

Call centre said it should actually be paid within 28 days and referred the matter to my branch.

Apparently these are branch based initiatives and so it's the branch who have responsibility for crediting the savings account with the £100.

I'll have a callback from branch, and hopefully my £100, within 48 hours. :)
