scbk - Funny you should say that, here is a council consultancy on road speeds...

    http://agendas.luton.gov.uk/cmiswebpublic/Binary.ashx?Document=12464

Check out for one Dunstable Road, 74% of public, 2 councilors agree that 40mph is correct, they are overruled by the other 2 who go on to decide speed cameras should also be installed on the new 30mph limit.

And the one most likely to be caught when the police are having a clamp down.

Ever had any points on your licence?

Most likely to be caught? I doubt it, since I have this remarkable ability to 'observe' the road ahead.

    No points, ever. Next question?

utter tosh, why would it have a 30mph limit then ?

Do you know how councils and the highways agency sets speed limits?

    No? I do.

    What is more dangerous:-

    A.

    a) Man driving along a country lane at 60mph+ mentally examining the route, taking in entrances and exits at the side of the road, reading the road ahead, looking for other vehicles on roads that join the one he is driving on, and anticipating traffic ahead.

    or

    b) Man driving at 60mph obeying the speed limit, and studying his speedo.

I always drive the country roads here at 60mph else id never get anywhere.:D

And speed camera's are a menace, most police officers would agree - they distract you from your driving and surroundings, think about it. Its not rocket science.

Indeed. Keep the number on the speedo at or lower than the number on the stick you passed and speed cameras become completely unimportant and therefore not a menace. They only are distracting for those who habitually break the law.

As I have demonstrated on other posts here and elsewhere, this is a complete myth.

There have been many documented cases of drivers who were within the limit, receiving tickets as a result of wrongly calibrated camera equipment, incorrect operation by camera van staff, or other procedural errors.

The "I've done nothing wrong, so I've nothing to fear" logic just doesn't hold water with our present authorities.

I have been providing assistance, including Lay Representation at Court hearings (current score: won 57, lost 14), to defendants in parking cases for over 5 years. I have an LLB (Hons) degree, and have a Graduate Diploma in Civil Litigation from CILEx. However, any advice given on these forums by me is NOT formal legal advice, and I accept no liability for its accuracy.

And the idea that they are not distracting to people who don't want to intentionally speed is also ridiculous.

And wrong. If you agree with him, both you and he are of a lower standard of driving than a learner. You don't find learners constantly looking at their speedo yet they're expected to remain within the limit to pass a test.

If you can't maintain a speed long enough for it to be safe to glance at the speedo again, you're not fit to drive.
If you can't work out when it's safe to glance at the speedo, you're not fit to drive.

You are a professional driver, yet you state you don't examine the route you are driving along, don't look for entrances and exits along it, you don't read the road ahead, you don't look for traffic joining the road you are on and you don't anticipate the traffic ahead.

Ah, your a trucker, you don't need any road sense.
