Where did I pick up tummy bug?

Returned from Egypt (Sharm) last week.
I haven't put in a hotel review yet because..............
While we were there we went on a day trip to Cairo.
The hotel was fantastic 5* platium.
We took a breakfast box from the hotel on our trip (just danishes, fruit, juice, ect).
We had lunch in Cairo on the banks of the Nile. I was worried about eating outside the hotel, so had veg, pots, pasta & bread. No salads or meat. But I did have cake with a creamy sort of filling.
We had no dinner, stopped at a service place in the desert - I wouldn't dream of eating there, so got family pack of crisps & cans of drink & had them.
Too late, too tired & too dirty to go to eat when we got back, shower & bed.
Got up the next morning, I had a massive breakfast.
Just before lunch I got the trots BADLY, 2 days in bed, runs were like yellow stained water.
Hubby had bad guts on & off (BUT men & hes no different say they have flu when its a cold), he said how brave he was as he put up with it & held it, you couldn't hold what I had. He put loads of mayo on everything, he ate the funny beef bacon & chicken sausages, hes a savage. I think he ate too much rich food, too much different combos, too much mayo & stuff drenched in mayo.
Do you think I got the bug in the restaurant in Cairo 24 hours before or at breakfast in the hotel (no meat in my breakfast, eggs & carbs & yogurt)?
I used antibac gel before eating too.

Theres no way of telling, some bugs will show symptoms within hours, some not for days. I think you should go on instinct, was there anywhere that you think was more likely than anywhere else? Sorry I couldn't help more.:A:A:A:A:A:A0

Its more likely to have been picked up from handling Dirty money, then hands go near mouth etc and just because the hotel is a 5 star doesnt mean you didnt get your dicky tum from eating something from there."Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."0

TBH I think thats a bit of a myth
Serious bugs & organisms can't live on paper.
But I used antiback gel all them time anyway.0 -

Are u sure about bugs and paper?
I havent been to sharm but I know of 3 families who have been this year and everyone of them got a tummy bug while they were there. One of them said to me "we were so careful used anti bac spray etc etc"
maybe that is why it is so cheap there0 -

My gut :rotfl: instinct is the restaurant.
I have heard that things like that take 24 hours to show.
I've had dodhy guts before & its NEVER taken 24 hours though.
BUT I've never had dodgy guts like that before.
I blamed the restaurant, I was worried about it anyway, thats why I didn't trust the meat or salads. TBH I didn't even eat it all anyway, I didn't like it much, but that could have been because I was wary.
Even if it was the hotel, the sort of stuff you eat for beakfast is unlikely to cause that, unless it was the eggs or yogurt, but I would have thought if either of them were to blame the smell or taste would be a give away.
I have a great sense of smell & taste.0 -

Pretty sure about the bugs & paper.
Our hotel wasn't cheap, it was over 2k for us both.
If it was the paper notes, the antibac would have solved the problem anyway.
So I think that proves its more than that.0 -
a quick google search brought up an article that claims 90% of all egyptian notes harbor bacteria that can cause illnesses.
I would post link but pc playing up
The hotel may not have been cheap but it is a budget destination and their standards are not the same as ours0 -

No way....they can live on the surface of the paper, you can pick up bugs off stair rails, door knobs, grabbing the rail as you step on a bus....touching your sweaty forehead then brushing your mouth or nose...anything.
That's why the England cricket team always get the trots in India despite having their own chef and only drinking bottled water, bottled beer or boiled tea.
Anytime you think about it...wash your hands.0 -
Could have been anything you ate. Just because a food contains no meat, doesn't mean that it didn't give you an upset stomach. A few years ago, I got food poisoning from a piece of Tesco cheesecake!
If I had to try and pinpoint the cause, I would say that the eggs are the most likely culprit. You could also have caught it from anyone you came into contact with or from touching dirty surfaces (less likely though). Thanks to everyone who posts comps, I love winning prizes big and small

So you didnt eat much outside of hotel and used anti-bac gel and you still got dicky tum, could of been the water the veg etc was washed in,i doubt you will ever know.
Believe me the bugs on dirty money can be worse than some dodgy food you would have eaten.
I couldnt be bothered with all this over sensitivity about what you eat while out etc ,let alone using gel repeatedly all day because as you have found out its done you no good whatsoever."Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."0
