Blindman - thanks for the fantastic detailed advice - I followed it to the letter.
Glenn - I booked a room in NY and followed up with a mail confirming 2 x beds.
FYI - The Roosevelt for £124 (inc all taxes) - closest I found on other sites £175-£211 + taxes. Three attempts at re-bid from £80 to £100 ex tax0 -

The bedding type is allocated on check-in (as in normal bookings) so if a twin bedded room is a major factor then the earlier you check-in the better chance of getting your choice.
Some photos on Tripadvisor show the rooms.0 -
Blindman
I e-mailed the hotel and they sent me a mail confirming a room with two beds. This should be sufficient confirmation don't you think?
Any recommendations on car hire in the US? Various pick-ups/drop offs.
Priceline seem to only offer airport to airport
Thanks again for your help with this0 -

I wouldn't rely on it if you turn up really late

IMHO you should NOT use priceline for car hire.
There are (usually) better bargains to be had without the hassle of PL.
I always look at Netflights and have found them to be consistently the cheapest.
You're not driving in New York :eek:0 -
Thanks again - only in & out of NY!0

For carhire I recommend doing a bit of searching with https://www.travelsupermarket.com - https://www.carhire8.co.uk and https://www.dollar.co.uk ( i prefer dollar car hire as never had a prob with them)*If you like the advice I give...let me know by clicking the THANKS button*

and it's no further out than the Royal Barrie - it is only .4m between the two so you'll still be able to visit that cocktail bar (if it is still open!) - don't forget your cossies - the spa is great (and at the city centre it is all brand new). Have a great birthdayBern :j0 -
IIRC Edinburgh is not that good for PL wins.
There are 3 zones and the winning hotels that have been reported are listed here
Here's a list of recent(ish) wins
For 5* hotels there are two free rebid zones.
For all other star ratings there are none.
Depending when your son is visiting will depend on the amount need to win a hotel.
Update.
I got confused on priceline and as my son has mobility problems did not want to risk a hotel too far away from the city centre. I did various searches and ended up going through hotels.com but being a good moneysaver I checked with quidco first. Wow 10% off and then I found the Barcelo Carlton for an amazing £56.00 a night for a double room. On the Royal mile, right by the castle and a luxury hotel with a full gym and swimming pool. Woo hoo and then 10% off that with quidco. I still can not believe my luck. thanks again anyway blind.

Destination: New York City
Type of accommodation: 3.5/4* hotel
How many extra daily bids did you have available: Can't remember
How much were your 2nd/3rd etc & final bids: First bids starting at £65, received an offer when I bid £75.
And then write your Priceline hotel booking story
I'm off to New York with my wife for our anniversary (thursday to tuesday on 2nd weekend in November) and a birthday celebration. I'm mystery shopping the flight (free flight with Virgin) and got a great deal with Delta for mywife.
We're staying 5 days and initially I tried bids for the full 5 day duration being greedy for 4* only, but was getting nowhere. I then tried on the following day for just the Sunday and Monday night. I tried some bids at £65 then £70 and then added on the empty bid zones. I then bid £74 and got a response saying if I could bid £85. I bid £81 and got a room fr 2 nights in the Millenium Hilton - 4* - overlooking ground zero. The reviews are excellent.
I've since waited another week to book for Thurs-Sat. I tried approx 8 bids from £70 up to £80 (3.5* & 4* only). I then added in 3* and got the Courtyard Marriot in Midtown East for £81.
Overall, I'm delighted. I know it's not easy to get a good hotel for under £150 on Manhattan but I'm chuffed to bits.0
