dmg24 and myself have Gold Elite status with Marriott and, although they don't give you points or stay credit on a PL stay, they do give you all the other benefits of the Elite status, such as free continental breakfast, access to the Executive Lounge (which in turn provides free snacks, soft drinks and even free booze in some properties) and room upgrades. These benefits are provided regardless of how the stay was booked.

Obviously Marriott treat their customers better than Holiday Inn Priority club members!

I'm a Platinum:p Elite with HI and have never been upgraded etc on PL\Hotwire stays. Never a problem as I don't expect it.
I did get access to an Exec lounge in Secaucus-Meadolands which provided us with free booze and food in the evening  and that was when I'd only just joined the PC
  • Hi I am a complete novice to all this and just tried to read blindman's excellent report on here but the mind boggles and I can't concentrate too much on right now. We are going to Canada in a few weeks but my son wants to go to Edinburgh for 2 nights while we are away as he is over from Canada. He wants to stay in a hotel in Edinburgh pretty central but can travel on the bus to places a bit further away. Anyone got any awesome stories about hotels in Edinburgh and how much they paid and the stars. It is a bit overwhelming for this ole senior gal but I am trying to keep up with the world. Any suggestions or tips gratefully received.

IIRC Edinburgh is not that good for PL wins.
There are 3 zones and the winning hotels that have been reported are listed here

    Here's a list of recent(ish) wins

For 5* hotels there are two free rebid zones.
For all other star ratings there are none.

Depending when your son is visiting will depend on the amount need to win a hotel.

Is anyone having problems logging into priceline today? I've been trying to get a room on there for abot 2 weeks now, with no problems and this morning its telling me my email isn't recognised

Edit: never mind, just me being stupid!
  • Good to see that people are getting lots of success with Priceline.

I myself have not been able to get any winning bids. I have been bidding for a 4 night stay in late September, but this was 2-3 weeks ago, so I reckon I wasn't bidding close enough to the dates to get good offers. I went up to about 85 pounds for a 4-star hotel in the islington/mayfair areas but nothing.

I also then tried for two night stays in early October... placed my bids last week, up to 70 pounds but got nothing as well for the same areas.

After reading most of the thread, I think that the cheapest 4 star hotels through priceline is probably the Kensington ones, where there has been quite a number of successes at around the 50-70 pound mark for a 4 star.

For those looking for a 5-star, might I suggest the Grange St Paul, a new hotel, through Lastminute's "Top Secret Hotel" program. Its going for 89 a night since its still in "soft launch" phase, check out the lastminute top secret hotel thread for more details that I posted.

    .

You don't say when in September but an quick look found this winning bid at $85

The cheapest wins are usually in Islington, Kensington and Bloomsbury.

For the cheapest 5* then the Marriott in Docklands has been won at $99. Probably too far out for a city centre visit though.
  • I know I'm always asking for help but how would I know that I have definately bid for the hotel I'm after? I'm looking at the marriott royal in bristol for 23rd and 24th of October for 2 adults.

    Thanks in advance

Are you starting at the correct Priceline page?

    It's fairly straight forward.

Have you read the "walk through"

You can't bid for a specific hotel
  • Hi thanks, the bit I am struggling at is where you can name the hotel you want. The catchment area for bristol is quite large so winning a hotel out of the town centre would be a right pain. Sorry to sound thick

You can't  You can name the price, star level and area.

With Bristol the area is huge so you have to weigh up the pros (cheaper hotel room) with the cons-may be nowhere near the centre.

Looking at past wins is a guide at what you may get-Not sure if yo want to risk it an assume you'll get one of those
