Hello,

Just read through the articles as was looking for a London hotel for a trip in January.

Managed to get a night at the Grosvenor House on park lane (5-star) for £140.11 INCLUDING TAX. It has a fairly good rating on trip-advisor, no real negative points in the comments I read.

It doesn't state which room so I shall assume the cheapest which if booked directly through the hotels site is £279.00 EXCLUDING TAX per night!

I am very pleased and would like to say thanks!

As noted by PBA on the other thread, it is also helpful to post wins on BetterBidding. On BB you can search for wins under the relevant areas, and you can also search by area and date.

Used this system to find a 4* NYC hotel for 2 nights:

Direct booking would have cost £330+tax
I got it for £214 incl. tax

I've diligently gone through the process as described, though when I go to put my CC details in it will only let me put in US address details... Am I missing a trick here?

If you copy the example shown in earlierpost,put the state as CA zip 90011 thats what I did and I am useless I just followed the advice on earlier posts,I will help if I can identify which bit is sticking

Result...checked this out after last weeks Moneysavingexpert email.

Off to Oz in September and still had to book a hotel for Sydney for 3 or 4 nights....wasnt too fussed where as we'll be out visting and sightseeing most of the time....checked through Priceline to see what the likely hotels were....was looking liike Sydney Marriot or similar....checked on their website and a few other..£150 per night.

Bid on Priceline.....£70 a night for 4 nights in October!!! Result!
Wish I'd bid £60 now!

Yup, gave this a go last week after reading about it in the email. Not sure if I've exactly bagged a bargain but it was great fun and now we have a surprise awaiting us in Paris.....

I've managed to get a double room at the Hotel Concorde La Fayette for just over £70 per night for 3 nights in early September. The hotel is perhaps not the most fancy we could have had but the fact that it belonged to a large chain and was virtually on top of the metro station was quite reassuring I guess.

It might have been possible to win the bid for less but I'm quite happy with what we've got. The hotel has had a real mix of feedbacks on the various sites, ranging from people who were very pleased with it to those who absolutely hated it....go figure...

A couple of warnings about Priceline though:

We can't use the american site so must go through priceline.co.uk to bid

Be careful you don't inadvertently get the credit card you've used in the bidding locked just before going away on your hols - that's happened to me when priceline tried to put a 'test purchase' of £1 on my card repeatedly in a short space of time and Mastercard locked my card thereafter with no warning whatsoever. No big deal though as I only had to ring them to get it all sorted in the space of 2 minutes. :-)

I did not have much time and cheapest central chain hotels were about £150 though other websites. I checked the biddingfortravel website, looked like people were getting rooms for about $140 USD so bid at £75 GBP. Did not realise this was +tax ( should have read the article fully!!) so got accepted at the Marriott with a total cost of £98

Rooms at the Marriott for the same night were over £300 on hotel booking sites so still a bargain.

I wanted a twin room, couldn't find an e-mail for the hotel so contacted Marriott general customer services by e-mail.

Me : quoting reservation number - can I have a twin non-smoking room.
Ans : Non smoking request noted, no twin rooms at this hotel.

Checked hotel website - see that they do offer a rollaway bed as an option.

Me: Can I have a rollaway bed?
Ans : Sorry - all requests must be made to Priceline.

Check Priceline website - all requests must go to the hotel.

Me Can I have a rollaway bed + gave them link to Priceline page.
Ans : On further checking OK - requested passed to hotel.


Arrived at the hotel, the request for a non-smoking plus rollaway bed had been accepted. However we asked again for a twin room, and was offered a large room with two queen size beds with a city view at rate or harbour view for a £10 supplement. They also put us on a higher floor as requested to reduce traffic noise.

So on reflection -
Great bargain,
Looking at the sites betterbidding looks as if it had more information than biddingfortravel so should have checked both.
Should have realised price was plus tax - my fault
Make any requests direct to the hotel if you can rather than central reservations, and ask again at check-in ( It costs noting to ask ).
If you go for an expensive hotel watch out for the price of extras, although free coffee was available until 9AM.

Now trying to do a search for Paris - thanks coolcarma for your report. :wave:
