hi, can you tell me if you think im on the cheapest deal for me please
i have line rental off bt which with caller display is £18mth dd but im going to cancel the caller display. 6.99mth to aol for broadband and all inclusive calls. 1899 for 08 numbers. i make no mobile calls
    thanks in advance

Cancel the Caller Display and ask for BT Privacy at Home which is the same thing for free.
  • All my family have mobile phones with free calls to landlines so I no longer need a home phone package. However, I do still need a line rental to connect to my ISP. (I have unplugged the house phone because all I get is sales calls anyway!)

What I want is the cheapest line rental I can get that lets me use any ISP I like. I'm currently with O2 so had to have a BT landline (with Anytime calls). However, I am out of contract with BT and out of contract with O2 this month. So I'd like to shop around for cheaper broadband too.

I think I should be able to save quite a bit if I can find the right deals. Will the Primus Saver at £6.79 per month suit me?

Does connecting to your ISP counts as a landline call? If it does, this might be any expensive option for me because the 3 of us use the internet a lot! Help someone please?

The Talktalk deal via simplifydigital seems good but despite telling the operative (3 times) I wanted the evening & weekend deal only, she made the same 'mistake' repeatedly & has signed me up for the more expensive anytime call option; more time-wasting calls & hanging on the line tomorrow! Always good to remember you have the right to cancel.....

Only if you're using dial-up to connect to the internet.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Can anyone help please, I have read about 18185 number to reduce call charges and want to sign up, but when I try to do that the sign up page won't let me. It crashes as soon as I change Mr to Mrs I've tried going from the bottom of the page up, but this doesn't work either. You can't contact them without a membership number and as I can't get one I can't contact them. Does anyone know how to fix this problem please?

I'm with BT and have their unlimited evenings and weekend call package. I'm wondering whether I should change to their unlimited call plan and pay up front. They charge me £12.98 at the moment (with paper free discount etc.) and I make very few calls - may last bill showed I made 13 calls and 10 were free. I'm not sure if I should stay as I am, move to the "new" £10 per month with weekend calls free, or upgrade to the unlimited evenings and w/end calls package. I'm getting very confused with their set up fee's which apply to the non-inclusive minutes. Any advice please?

Strange. I've just tried and have no such problem.

As it's the first entry on the form and is unimportant anyway, have you tried just ignoring it and making your first entry your First Name?

How can you upgrade to the E&W package when you're already on it?

Paying £5/month for the Unlimited Anytime Plan would be silly if you only made 3 chargeable calls last quarter.

What's the problem with the call set up fee? If the call is not one which is inclusive, you get charged the 11½p (shortly to be 12½p) as well as the per minute rate for the call. It's as simple as that.

    Told you I was confused!
Should I stay as I am and pay for the odd daytime or early evening call, or go for the pay up front line rental which gives w/end calls only, or for a fiver extra go for unlimited calls?

You certainly don't need the £5/month Anytime calls plan. It sounds to me like you don't need anything other than the Unlimited Weekend Plan (so, if you're paying £3/month for that, downgrade as soon as doing so is penalty-free) and a www.18185.co.uk account (for your evening/weekend/mobile/international calls).

If you opt for the Line Rental Saver (pay a year up front) you will lose Paper-free discount (so the alleged saving is reduced by 12 x £1.25).

Was thinking of switching to the 12m £6.79 primus deal. No way now after: 1) sent them some queries by email and got no reply; 2) some negative posts above; and 3) internet research reports the company filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and look at the horror stories on reviewcentre.com/reviews145423.html. One post says:

Simply put - the worst customer service I have ever received from any company in any industry. I urge others who have received equally terrible customer service to contact OFCOM regarding their practices.

1.5 out of 5 is the average rating. Thought it was too good to be true....
