School uniform advice - please?

Hi all
My daughter is starting school in september and i'm wanting to make a start now on her uniform etc. I've been given some stuff but i have no idea how many of everything i need ie.
shirts/t-shirts
skirts/pinafores
sweatshirts/cardigans
I've not really been given much info from the school - does anyone have any input about quantities that i will need and any other things i will need (or that you have found useful!)
My daughter at the moment keeps falling over and putting holes in her knees therefore i'm thinking of knee high socks instead of tights (to save money) is this a good idea?

Any advice gratefully received - thanks!

We managed with 1 skirt, 1 sweater, 2 shirts and 5 pairs of knee socks... sponging off paint, yoghurt etc when required, washing at weekend.

BUT some kids seem to attract dirt more than others!! I think we were lucky!

    Good luck

I think socks instead of tights is a good idea.

I'm getting 5 tops, one for each day so I don't have to do any ironing midweek.
3 jumpers, one to wear, one to wash, one to dry as he always gets his top filthy.
3 pairs of trousers (same as above)

They need PE kit too and he'll be getting one of each item.

I was going to buy the school bag, book bag and PE bag, but I've changed my mind. I want him to find something different so it's easy for him to spot his own stuff. And he wants my husband's Beatles tin to use as a pack-up box so that will be easy for him to spot too.

I'm not buying him a pencil case or anything yet as I think they're too young to be able to sort out whose stuff belongs to whom and it will just cause arguments. They have tissues in class, but I'll pack some in his bag anyway and they get fruit free every day so I won't be sending an extra snack. He won't be given any money for that reason too.

I can't think of anything else, except that I'll be getting a permanent marker to put his name on everything!

Oh, and someone told me that M&S are selling uniform very cheaply at the moment.

:rotfl: Yup. Unfortunately, mine is one of them! I only had 2 school shirts and one skirt and one jumper. There's no chance I'll get away with that with him! I used to teach a boy who came to school every morning totally immaculate - brilliant white shirt, neatly pressed, smart trousers, shiny shoes. Every single day that lad went home totally filthy, shirt mostly undone and often covered in no small amount of mud, shoes caked in mud on wet days, face like he's spent the day digging trenches. :rotfl:

    I would suggest 5 tee-shirts - 2 sweatshirts and 2 pinafores.

My kids always manage to get dirty.

I would definitely take advantage of M&S selling their uniform cheaply because I have often found that other uniforms have gone sort of "crusty" when they are washed!

I have just bought a pack of 3 x polo shirts from Tesco for about £3.25.

The nightmare for me is school shoes!!! Aaaaaaaargh.

Just to warn people: I've had M&S polo shirts for hte past couple of years and they shrink terribly: my (tall) 4yo is wearing his brother's age 8 shirts that have shrunk to around age 6 size!!

Personally I do 2 jumpers, 2 trousers. Used to do 3 polo shirts but I am going to up that to 5 as I can't be bothered washing.

DD is starting secondary and she'll have 3 blouses as I trust her to keep a bit cleaner (and they are £15 a pop!)!

I bought 6 jumpers and trousers and i think 9 poloshirts and they have lasted the whole year. Next school wear stands up to washing really well. Did buy the school jumpers but picked up a couple of Next ones when he got pen on a few.

That meant he could have clean every day and I could continue just doing a weekly wash. Depends on how often you wash and how dirty kids get lol. If it isnt dinner, its pen, chalk etc.

School gave them their first book bag and they tend to use just that unless going on trips as the bags fit into trays and they only tend to bring reading books home. Pencils etc are provided by school.

He did need a wallet as they can buy a snack at morning break (toast/juice etc) so he needed somewhere safe to keep his money.

My DD has uniform at nursery which has served as a good trial run for big school in September.

My DD had polo shirts from Asda, Tesco and Sainsburys this year.

I found the sainsburys the best for washing and keeping their shape, The asda ones were a bit shorter than the rest and don't wash as well but they are cheaper so maybe you won't mind if you need to replace them after a few months? (you can't have enought of these)

Her pinafores came from BHS and are fantastic, they have been washed every week for a year and still look great. (She had 3)

Don't forget to get a jumper/cardigan, I didn't get one over the summer last year and it took ages to find one after September.

Not sure about other stores but Asda sell their basic range all year round now, so no need to buy 101 polo's now just in case you need them!

My DS only does afternoons at the mo so has 2 pairs of everything.. [jumpers, tshirts & trousers] and we just swap halfway thru the week. He starts fulltime in September so will prob buy an extra set so he has 3 of everything. I always get most of his uniform from Asda/Tesco where possible.. red sweatshirts are often hard to come across in the supermarkets so have been ordering them online from Adams. As the above poster said, the supermarkets have the basics all year round so nice and cheap and easy to replace items when needs be..

The Asda close to me says that they have uniform in all year round but in reality its just the leftovers that they didn't sell in the summer, they have only had uniform in size 12/13 and 14/15 and only in one colour since about christmas
