Helen, don't feel guilty the seller will hopefully have known he had to protect himself with sufficient insurance so he just needs to claim back from the RM and all will be well.
Put the claim in now, you may find it all resolved in a matter of a day or two once the seller realises he can't stall you any longer.

Update:
Sellar has not received item today, really disappointed(both me and the sellar), hes saying he needs the phone by friday.....what can I do??? Ive sent him a polite email asking him to wait a few more days and if he doesnt receive it that I'll refund him, I dont think hes going to wait 15days though. Spent ages on the phone, spoke to RM customer services and the buyers distribution office and no-one seems to know anything about the parcel.
Shall I just send him a refund if it doesnt arrive by friday(8 working days) hes already really annoyed and 15 days seems like a really long wait...0 -
smile,
You've really got to go with what you are comfortable with now. It could still arrive, we've all got our stories of items taking more than a week or two to arrive. I know if I was the buyer I would be getting jumpy now, but I can also understand how frustrating it must be for you as the seller.
I think, if it was me I would try and stall just a little longer, I try not to refund before about the 2 week mark which I think is quite reasonable both from a buying and selling point of view.

i say stick with coa deliveries for small parcels and just put any losses down as a non profit sale ( ie no postal cost refund wiped out profits) and dont overcharge on postal costs in listings.
The only exception would be for certain items like mobile phones (as is this case here) where your more than likely to get somone saying they havent recieved it ( scammers etc), i would have it send recorded for them
For larger parcels i say recorded deliveries since the small extra cost of recorded delivery would be worthwile to prevent buyers from lying about not recieving goods ( i,m guessing it will pay for itself in now time).0 -
buggu, recorded is no good for most mobile phones as the insurance only covers up to £30. For items over £30 they really must be spent special, or for very heavy parcels, by parcel post with the correct level of insurance taken out.
I agree though for that items under £30 there is rarely any reason to use recorded delivery, I tend to send all items under £30 with a COP and just claim back from the post office if it doesn't arrive. If you send something recorded and it doesn't arrive you are even further out of pocket as you don't get the 66p back for the RD charge.
I'm sitting here panicking at the moment about a RD item sent 7 days ago and not showing as delivered (again) , not an ebay item but a phone cashback request so no cashback forms received by e2save, no refund...arghhh..

I agree. And the same advantages apply to anything worth over £30 as well. Because the only difference, as I see it is:
Item worth up to £30 > insurance FREE through Royal Mail
Item worth £30.01 - £100 > insurance 75p through Royal Mail.
Item worth over £100 > see royalmail.com
You'd almost convined me of the need for proof of delivery. So why do you say that for "items under £30 there is rarely any reason to use recorded delivery"? Is it because it's cost-effective to take a risk, like I've always done?

You raise two questions here, firstly, I still disagree that ordinary 1st or second class mail can be sent with additional insurance for an extra 75p. That additional 75p for insurance up to £100 refers only to parcels which are a lot dearer for smaller items than special delivery anyway. See the links in my long post a page back for direct links to the RM website explaining about insurance.
So for me, the only safe way of sending things like mobile phones worth over £30 would be special delivery, parcels would be no good as it would be dearer and slower. I would never ever send an item over £30 without tracking or insurance.
As for how I send my parcels under £30 then yes I rarely use RD and just rely on a standard COP. HOwever, by doing that I am aware that I will lose a paypal chargeback, so I have a system where I automatically refund for lost parcels before a buyer even has to threaten a chargeback.
However, where people are concerned about using paypal safely then my answer about obtaining tracking is correct. If a seller has a buyer claim non delivery and the seller is unwilling to refund then they will definitely lose a chargeback claim unless they have used RD or SD postage. So for new sellers or people who mistrust their buyer, then I would always advise using tracking for items even those under £30 purely so that they can stop any chargeback claim.
