We too have, and have always had, English Springer Spaniels. I work as a volunteer for them also so know quite a lot about them, and where they are an absloutely adorable breed, as you said they pick up, hunt out and rummage through anything and everything!
We sadly learned the hard way about chocolate poisoning pets many years ago
So if in doubt, leave it out...

no mailing for me but i have been looking at the bags for ages and they are gorgeous so decided to go for it !

Anyway... my friend said at the weekend there was tons of the Farley's in her local ASDA, so maybe it is worth you asking parents and relatives from other towns, to check when they shop as the maybe could pick up some for you?
