Interesting. I use AVG and it is true it has never once resovled a virus held in a java file - and they are the only viruses I have ever had on my machine. I have been to the Avast website adn their free product looks much more comprehensive than the AVG product. Is anyone more expert on these matters able to advise? I think I mihgt ditch AVG!

I have Avast on one computer and AVG on another! I find them both fine and having read others' opinions on both they both seem to have good reviews from people, it's personal preferance. AVG is easier to deal with somehow and Avast which runs on the computer with the most on takes ages to run (probably the volume of stuff rather than running slow). I wouldn't think you have any reason to ditch AVG, after all it's at least telling you that there's a virus so that's good! unless you want to try Avast and see.

i just deleted it through mcafee and its not showing up on trend micro either now, but should i run a scan in safe mode as one user suggested or one with system restore off to make sure?

    I wouldn't bother, if it's gone it's gone!

Edit - that might sound too flippant, personally I wouldn't bother as long as nothing's showing up with antivirus, you will lose restore points by turning off system restore so you might or might not be concerned if you do.

  • I'd use any, they both have lots of updates.
AVG detects a virus within a java archive, then the java archive with the virus, the same file or virus.
It can't delete the virus out of the archive but can delete the archive so the virus has gone.

I always check avg test results to see the archive & virus is the same path to be sure.

I think avast reports the archive as one & deletes it or coverts it to plain text and moves it (vault).

They both work but avg confuses with reporting archive & virus as two infections.
