I didn't hear that said at the time. Since Zone Alarm existed before Vista it was surely up to Microsoft to accommodate ZA, not the other way round. You would think that Microsoft would test new software with all widely used applications. Zone Alarm was not the only application that experienced problems with Vista as I understand it.

Why should MS make their operating system around applications they have no commercial interest in? MS provide the beta releases of their operating system and support to on what has changed and what implication this will have in order for a manufacturer to ensure they can make their product compatible.

They couldn't and shouldn't do everything for a manufacturer.

You surely are joking?! You are suggesting it's up to someone creating a new operating system to accommodate older software?

No. It's up to the OS company to publish details / technical previews and so forth, and then up to the third party software manufacturers to get nto gear to update software ready for a new system - as is the case always. It's a natural part of the software development cycle.

Otherwise we'd still all be using software designed for Windows 3.1 under XP and Vista...

Thanks to all who posted on this thread. I awoke to this problem this morning. Although I guessed it was the update at the root of the problem as it only got installed overnight. I knew it wasn't the connection as another PC (without ZA and probably not updated yet) was working fine.

That said I did check the ZA logs and didn't see anything that suggested it had gone into overdrive blocking things. You'd think it would chuck out all sorts of warnings if it was having to shut down all activity! I might just uninstall it TBH, and revert to XP's Firewall.

I didn't have time to play this morning so will sort this out tonight. Meanwhile I can work happily knowing it's nothing major. And it's stopped raining (for now). Hurrah!

I have read on another forum that another workaround is to

edit "Custom" for Internet Security Zone set to HIGH and
    check "Allow outgoing TCP Ports:80,443."

Don't know if this works because I don't use ZA.

Agnitum Outpost Pro works fine - it's far better than ZA anyway :)

To be honest, I'd be more confident in installing the update and running either ZA in it's reduced setting due to the nature of the vunerability that was discovered and the impact it could cause..
  • lets hope ive read this right. i have unchecked the offending download KB951748, and am now downloading the other updates on the list. Should i now keep updates off automatic until a fix for the fix comes out??
