According to another thread someone who lives in Hayle where this company are based has said that the staff were all taken to lunch yesterday and no one has been seen in or around their offices today - such a shame when a company appears to have been successful.

This has just been posted by Barclays on the other thread I was watching - does give an alternative contact number - hope it helps

This statement is made by Barclays in relation to various postings and enquiries in relation to Crown Currency Exchange (CCE).

At the time of writing Barclays has not been notified of any formal insolvency proceedings in relation to CCE and we confirm that we have not taken any steps to place CCE into any insolvency process.

Barclays does not facilitate any foreign currency transactions for CCE or on behalf of its clients. Barclays cannot comment on the specifics of agreements between CCE and its customers as Barclays is not party to those contracts. It is CCE's responsibility to fulfil its contractual obligations to its customers under the contract between them.

Due to customer confidentiality, Barclays regrets that it cannot provide any information in relation to CCE. Customers of CCE will need to refer their queries directly to CCE. For further information, please contact CCE directly on 01736 751627 or 01736 751663. Alternatively, you can write to: Crown Currency Exchange, John Harvey House, Foundry Square, Hayle, Cornwall TR27 4HH or by Fax: 01736 758148.
  • Thanks again Daren,

Where is this other thread? I'm trying to track it down to contact others in the same boat.

It was probably my money that took them to lunch! It's not looking good and the numbers you listed are either constantly engaged or ring out! Not the best start to the weekend.
Does anyone have any idea where customers stand legally in these circumstances? If Barclays are saying they're not taking any action against them surely they have no excuse not to explain themselves?
  • Hi, I was expecting $2000 dollars today, but no show. Like everyone else I couldnt get through on the phone. I've just spoken to the Financial Services Authority (FSA). They tell me they started to get calls from customers today complaining about Crown Currency Exchange. They say they are still registered for trading but this doesnt mean they are not in trouble. They say they are looking into the matter, but in reality there will not be much more information until Monday.

They say the worst case scenario is that if they go into liquidation, the people they owe money to will have to wait in line for anything left to be shared out. It would be a long drawn out process.

What a bad way to end my week.
  • Thanks for the info. We'll just have to sit it out and see what happens I suppose. It's disgusting that a company like that which is knowingly about to go under still takes new orders the day before closing shop leaving people stranded! I hope they all have a nice weekend spending our hard earned money!
I would'nt have the first idea on how to start a legal process against them so any help would be much appreciated.

Rich - the other thread is titled " Is there a problem with Crown Curreny? I simply put Crown Currency Exchange in the search bar and selected forums and found it there.

Hi my daughter is soon travelling to Australia with a year work permit and has tasked me with sorting out the best and safest way to access her money. She will open an Australian bank account but this will only be of any use when she gets herself a job...so in the mean time:-
I thought she could use her Nationwide debit card for cash withdrawels (at least until 1st Nov- then I'm not sure if it will still be the best).
She has been approved for a Halifax Clarity CC initially I advised her to get this for emergencies but I'm now thinking she should use it for purchases with a DD set up to clear it each month.
I also think she should take a prepaid card and this is where i am struggling as this is new to me- will she need a sterling one for use in Australia?
If so how will we know what the rate will be as they seem to set the rate when you load the card?
She doesn't want to carry much cash (as she will be staying in hostels etc) and would be likely to visit the ATM fairly regularly so would the Caxton card be better than the FairFx one which has a £1.50 fee for ATM transactions?
Is there another card she should be considering?
    Many thanks for reading

If she has 12.9% APR on the Clarity, she should use it for everything and clear the balance at the end of the month.

Consider a free FairFX card as a backup.

That's all she needs - unless she has another CC already in case the Halifax is lost/stolen - hard to get a replacement in Oz!
  • Has anyone tried it? Does the clubcard plus work in a foreign ATM?

Thanks for that...just one thing I'm still unsure about...am I right in thinking she will need the FairFX card in sterling for use in Australia? If so how will she know what rate she is getting?
