I'm going to Mexico and have a Nationwide flex account and credit card, will I incurr charges if I use these to withdraw cash from cash machine/pay for things on card?

I also have a Post Office card, which I think doesn't incurr any charges when used to pay for things - is this correct? Thanks in advance...

You will incur a 1% visa charge on the Nationwide cards. It will be in the exchange rate, not spelled out. If the ATM you use is a fee paying one you'll pay that - as you would whatever card you used.

There will be no charges on the PO card.

Thanks dzug1, is it better to use the PO card to just pay for trips, goods on ect rather than use to withdraw cash? I am trying to find threads on here too on where best to get some pesos and us dollars before I go aswell, M&S seems popular..

  • Hey guys and girls I have a quick question for you.

I am going to Prague in about 3 weeks time. I have €250 in cash which I would like to exchange into czech koruna. Would it be better to exchange this at home or should I wait until I get to prague?

If anyone has an idea what would be better in terms of rate I would be grateful.

DEFINITELY change it in Prague. The exchange rate will be better & if you change it in the UK, they will calculate Euros ==>£==>CZK, therefore making 2 lots of profit on the trade.
  • Hey all, I am a novice when it comes to credit cards, but I am looking into the Santander Zero Credit Card to take abroad. It all looks great on MSE, but the information about the APR confused me.

I thought that you only paid APR if you don't pay off your credit card bill in full at the end of the month? The info on mse, contradicted that for the international spending on this card.

Furthermore it said on the zero website that "cash transactions are charged at a standard rate of 27.9% APR" which martin said would only be a few quid per £100 spent. But obviously 27% of £100 is £27!?!

Thanks in advance for your help.
    Proudly cashing in since 2006. . .

It is £27, IF, you don't pay it back at the end of that month but leave it on the card for a whole year. APR means Annual Percentage Rate, so that's what you would get charged for a year. Paying the cash back at the end of the month is around 1/12 of £27 so a few quid.

    Dear all,

I'm going to Prague in about a month's time and I was wondering what's the best option for me in terms of travel money? Will it be wise to get a FairFX card (in Euros), which has 0% load for overseas purchases (despite the fact that I can only get them in Euros/US dollars and not Czech Koruna)?

I was also thinking of getting CaxtonFX card for cash withdrawals there (FairFX charges for ATM withdrawal).

Is this a wise idea? Is it better than getting Czech Koruna in cash here in the UK? Thanks in advance. I'm clueless.

    Hello All,

I just want to know if Nationwide does not charge if you use either the Cash card or debit card for withdrawals. If i understand it correctly, if the debit card is used for purchases, there is a charge of 1% for every purchase ? I will be going to the US and Canada in December and i would like to know what's the least expensive way of spending.

    Thank you in advance.

The debit card will charge you 1% for both cash withdrawals and purchases outside Europe.

The cash card won't charge you but (I believe) cannot be used for purchases.

For spending, Santander Zero or Post Office Mastercard are cheapest. For cash, Nationwide.
