We are going away for 3 months to Australia, NZ and Malaysia and although we will have credit cards(Abbey Zero,PO) we will need to draw cash...what's the best/cheapest way to do this?
  • Hello all,

I will be travelling around Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam at the end of July for a month. I've been organised and have my spending money in a Abbey ISA. The problem I have is that I don't want to keep a whole lotta of cash on me and I'm not comfortable getting a credit card. The reason for not having a credit card is that I won't be coming back to a job, but will be starting my PGCE (uni) in September. So having direct payments isn't an option as I won't have any money to pay into it.

However, I obviously don't want to incur extra charges for using my debit card abroad but understand it is inevitable. So my question what is the best debit card to use in Asia. (Nationwide use to be the best), Or if anyone else has a suggestion it would most welcome!

I only have an Abbey account.

    Thank you

    xx:T

Sparky £. Why not try Positively loading one of the 0% fee credit cards with some of your spending money (If this is allowed? I have accidently ended up with a positive balance in the past. i.e paid the bill then been refunded)

Whatever money you spend in July will already be sitting on the card and whatever is left on your return can be transferred to your bank account (Barclays do anyway).

As for debit cards even with the 1% from July Nationwide rates are still one of the best (The same cannot be said for their shambolic customer service however)

Lots of purchases in Australia... should I ditch my Nationwide Visa and go with the Post Office?

How do their exchange rates generally compare?

    this has already been answered!

I've got a NW Visa Debit Card and NW Cash Card and noticed from the latest MSE weekly email there was mention of having to use an esavings account to keep the free withdrawals coming.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but thought you always had to use an esavings account alongside the Flexaccount?

Just want to know if there have been any changes I should be aware of?

    Thanks

There's no change for existing Flex a/c holders - see full article here http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/banking/2009/06/nationwide-blocks-applicants-to-che

    hi,

just come back from Thailand and all the cash machines that i found add 150 Baht to the withdrawal as a charge - this is so expensive if you are also getting charged £2+ by your card provider

anyone got any ideas (apart from taking £ cash and changing it there) ?
  • i am going to florida in 4 weeks and im worried about taking too much cash. should i get an abby zero card or a fairfx card?
    which is best?
i cant find a rate for the abby zero card anywhere.
    does anyone know?
    thanks
  • Hey guys

This is my first time on these forums. I'm going travelling around Canada this summer and have a couple of questions about the cheapest way to take currency.

I've applied for a Nationwide Cashcard for free ATM withdrawls and am going to apply for a FairFX card for free chip and pin transactions. Are these my best options or should I be looking somewhere else? I'm a student so doubt I'll be able to get a credit card.

I would also like to know whether it would be best to get the Euro or US Dollar FairFX card as I'm buying in British Pounds and will be using the card in Canadian Dollars?

    Thanks for your help
