Nationwide Debit Card sent me a letter saying there changing their T&C's, but didn't quite understand it - is this the 1% loading martin has mentioned in his article from July - if so, what does that actually mean?

Is Nationwide still one of the best cards?

Can someone briefly explain the ways you might be charged and why Nationwide is still good?

    Hi,

I am off on holiday soon in europe and will be using my nationwide debit card at the cashpoint. One thing i have noticed previously is that when using the cash machine overseas i get asked if i want to process the transaction in euros or sterling - which one should i select??

    Thanks

Hi all just wanted a bit of advice really. Im off to Turkey on Friday and have been reading the board about changing money and using cards abroad. I have a Post Office MAstercard and applied for a Nationwide card, they offered me a Cashcard which i am not sure if its the same thing as the flexi card you all talk about on here. I have decided to use my Mastercard for withdrawing money abroad and taking about £200 in cash which i will change before I leave (havent decided where yet). Does this sound like im doing the right thing. dont want to end up with huge card charges.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I think I know the best way of spending money outside Europe.
If you can get a Nationwide CASH card, withdrawals are still free and then get the post office or abbey zero card for spending money on!
I believe you can only get the nationwide cash card if yu don't have any other nationwide accounts, but luckily, that was the first account I had and the card is still valid, so I can use it.

Just a word of warning if you choose to buy foreign currency online. You may be charged a percentage by your card issuer - even if you use your debit card. You'll need to check with your card issuer. Smile make such a charge (around 2%).
Incidentally Travelex promise to match the best rate you can find.
  • Beatsneedsrhymes...... I completely agree with what you are saying. I have just posted on another thread (Post Office credit card vs Nationwide)...... and very briefly, used both of these cards in Seattle 10 days ago, no more than 2hrs apart, and here are the exchange rates I got :

    Nationwide Visa 1.53286
    P/Office M/card 1.52303

So taking into account the 0.84% Nationwide fee, this suggests the M/card rate is about 1.5% worse. I know that rates change by the minute but both hit their respective accounts on the same day......... and I wouldn't have thought the $ fluctuated that much in such a short time.

Anyway, I am now waiting for 2 more transactions to come thru from New York yesterday....... so I will post the results of these when I get them.

    Anyone else tried comparing ?

    Regards.

    Pete

A couple of weeks ago we were in Tilburg, Netherlands, and I needed €400 cash. So I took 2 separate amounts of €200 on different debit cards consecutively from an ATM. The costs were:

Nationwide Flex a/c Visa debit card - £179.00 (overall rate 1.1173)

    Lloyd's Current a/c Visa debit card - £187.11 (£184.35 + £2.76) (overall rate 1.0689)

Over £8 difference in the two transactions, which were only one minute apart and both handled by the Visa network.
