compare travel money is now compare holiday money. I cannot post a link because I am new to the forum. If you try and go to the old address you are redirected, but you may want to update your bookmarks.

Thanks for that, but the new site isn't a patch on the old one which used to include rates for all the major high street banks and travel agents.
  • Hi, I'm apologise in advance if this has been asked already or in another forum, but I'm planning to get a pre paid Card like FairFX or caxton. I was thinking of getting the US dollar card as I'm in the USA for my holiday. However I'm planning to go to Ecuador first & since there official currency at the moment is the US dollar I'm wondering whether these cards would be fine to use without being stung with fee's?

Get a FairFX Anywhere card, it uses Mastercard's interbank rate, no ATM charges, just a 1.5% transaction card on anything you buy/withdraw.

Hi, my daughter is currenlty in Australia spending lots of money on her Halifax Clarity Card. She is using it for both purchases and cash withdrawals (she got stung with her 1st purchase of a new laptop as they processed it in pounds and not dollars-but she's on the look out for this now).
She has been using it now for a couple of weeks and it looks like she wont get her first bill until December so I have made an interim payment of £400 in the hope of reducing her interest charges. What I am wondering is will they use the £400 against the purchases or the ATM transactions?

One for Northerners maybe, but you can apply online and use internet banking:

The Cumberland Building Society has a Current Account with a Debit Card that is free to use abroad:

*USING YOUR CUMBERLAND VISA DEBIT CARD ABROAD
You can use your Cumberland Visa Debit card to pay for
goods or services, or to withdraw cash at a cash machine,
wherever you see the Visa sign. We will not charge you to do
this but any charges associated with your business current
    account will still apply.
Please note that when you use your Cumberland Visa Debit
card abroad to pay for goods or services, or to withdraw cash
at a cash machine, transactions will be converted into sterling
at the exchange rate on the date they are received by Visa in
the UK. We do not charge you to use our Visa debit card and
do not pass on any fees levied by Visa. The provider of an
ATM or retailer may apply a charge.

Unless they've changed the rules, you have to have an address in the area served by their branches.

But if you do - a good option

At the moment it will go against the items which have the lowest interest and that will be the purchases.

It will charge to the items with the highest interest, such as cash withdrawals, in either December or January in line with new legisalation.
  • If I preload a credit card like Nationwide Gold or Santander Zero so that it is in credit and then draw money abroad (EU) from a cash machine so the card stays in credit will I pay any fees?

Most probably you do not pay interest.
But It is against their T&C, Santander say they might ignore the pre-payment that have been made.

The worst things might happen, your card might get blocked while you are abroad and you really need it.

Like said by Luci, Most Credit Card apply what is called "Negative Payment Order", it clear the highest interest rate (e.g. cash withdrawal) the last.

But because you have transfer £400 to the account, you do not need to worry at all, as it will significantly reduce the interest as the interest is just about 1% a month.

Next time the best strategy to minimize the interest for withdrawal is to to keep separately. 1 Overseas Specialist Credit Card for Spending and one for cash withdrawal.

I Credit Card for Cash Withdrawal:
Halifax Clarity for Cash Withdrawal. Transfer money on the same date on the date withdrawal is made.

    I Credit Card for Spending/Purchase:
    Santander Zero
    Post Office
    Saga
