Great thread.
Here's my pennies worth.
I bought a hand soap dispenser that ony dispenses a small amount of soap (enough for the job). The soap seems to last for ever and when it does need refilling i can by any soap i like including refill packs. Whichever is cheapest. Oh, and no one can see what brand your using.
On the subject of MPG, i have found that it's not going slower that saves you fuel but how quickly you get to your desired speed. The slower you accelerate the more you save. I do this and still do my 70-80mph on motorways and it's saved me loads.
However, please dont pull out in front of people and then accelerate slowly as this is a bug bear for some people including me
Check to see if your home has economy7. Every home i've lived in has it so you you may not even know. If you do then buy some timers(very cheap now days) and put your washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer etc on them.
If you have an emersion heater you can buy a special timer for that too.
I think that'll do for now.0 -
I remember my dad doing this when we were kids. It's disgusting!!!! We would never have the sauce after he'd 'vinegarised' it. Wouldn't recommend this at all! Soz:eek:Like good food and drink?
Try Hotel Chocolat and Baileys.

I use ecover. I am convinced it lasts longer. It doesn't contain sodium laureth sulphate to make it froth up so it appears that your not getting value for your bucks. The proof however is in the pudding and it is less damaging on the rivers.
PS lick your plates or cook less potatoes, chips and pasta and mop the rest up with a bread. Oily - reduce the amount of oil in cooking, it is getting quite pricey, and you can reduce the amount of detergent needed. A cut piece of plastic form a margarine carton is an excellent cheap spatula for getting the rest of the sauce out of the pot too.0 -
Well I've just started the Atkins diet....so I can't eat chips or mop up with bread. However I did start a thread ages ago about why licking your plate is seen as a bad thing. It's not wasting food surely :AGirls are gonna love the way I toss my hair. Boys are gonna hate the way I seem.
I would rather drown with you than watch the surf with someone else0 -
I'm just frugal and hate washing dishes gillette147. Where's the thread on plate licking? That sounds potentially entertaining.0

I work permanent night-shift and trying to sleep during the day is a challenge at any time of year, especially, in summer with the increased outdoor activity.
To keep the house cool (perhaps not such a problem this year) I leave the attic trap-door three-quarters open. (It's connected to a Ramsay ladder so you have to be careful not to lower it too far in case someone bumps into it). However, it's surprising how much natural ventilation there is with all the windows closed, provided you leave all your internal doors open. If necessary, I then open several small upstairs windows which are protected by insect mesh. When it's especially hot I then slightly open a couple of larger windows. (Obviously, you have to bear in mind the security risk if opening any window without a suitable "opening restrictor" fitted).
Not only does this keep the house much cooler but it also prevents the attic from getting too hot. Incidentally, that's where I store loads of bulk buys, including, rice, pasta, cereal, tins, bottles and jars of various food/pickles/sauces etc. For several years now I have also kept my wine up there, which, amazingly, hasn't deteriorated despite the advice to store it in a much cooler place. Then again, only a few bottles reach more than 3 or 4 years-old!
This translates in to a warm house that gets 3 to 4 degrees HOTTER as evening approaches, just right to get poached in bed:mad:
I opened up our loft hatch and we had two small windows at the front open and I have kept the back door ajar during this hot spell.
Not only (during the day) have I felt a cool draft wafting around ( without the use of my 3 fans) but I can tell, that with having the loft hatch open the massively opressive heat build up as been MUCH reduced:D
This means that not only have I not had the need to use my fans ( which granted are not that expensive to run) but as evening approaches we have not had to blast either the living room or our bedroom with the air con unit, which IS expensive.
Your tip (if followed) is fantastic for those of us who are home all day ( I realise there are security implications doing this as you yourself pointed out) but it is genius and having tried it since you posted I can say hand on heart it has lowered our night time temps by 3 to 4 degrees and trust me, when I say that is the difference between comfortable and hell:j
So thank you so much for taking the time to post this I for one am VERY happy with the result:beer: :A0
