Sub-£400 powerful laptops discussion

Not really a 'powerful' laptop, but cheap and very portable. MSI have released an ultraportable laptop, the Wind, to compete against the Asus Eee and HP Mininote etc. However, these are not quite out yet and will probablt be around £330.
However, Advent have released a rebadged Wind under the model number 4211. This is a perfect Wind Clone, minus the fancy colour schemes, but is available now and is cheaper at £279.99!!

I picked one of these up on Friday as well from PC World.
Excellent little laptop, that is far superior to the Asus Eee PC.====0 -

Here we have two laptops, both with very respectable spec for the money. 12 months RTB warranty, but I have had one for 15 months and I can say that nothing's gone wrong with it that hasn't been a direct result of me being a muppet!
It's got to be worth a :money:0 -
Couldn't agree more with the poster who said investigate what spec you need first and then look for prices. Trying it or a very similar model out for ergonomics is also really important.
A laptop should last five years at least.
It is a bit of a gamble even if you get the spec right as it might break.
I think Lenovo thinkpads are the most reliable and elegant as well (most consumer submitted review/rating sites seem to rate them higher than others too). (Although it is wrong that Lenovo are the cheap end of IBM as someone pointed out, the Lenovo mentioned is a cheap Lenovo/IBM and not a thinkpad.)0 -
Avoid any place that has a big car park. PC WORLD and Comet spring to mind right now. Not only are their computers expensive, but the aftersales backup is terrible. For value for money and half decent backup then try the computer manufacturers Like e.g. NOVATECH are o.k, you`ll get a good laptop there for 320 quid. Dell are always a good bet (can be a little expensive but backup is good). But my favourite way is to seach your local town through one of the search engines, Yahoo type 'computer repairs and maufactures Birmingham/Huddersfield/Portsmouth (wherever you live) . You`ll get a list of local small companies try phoning a few of them and get them to point you towards someone nearby who builds computers. The small local manufacturers will often build you a high spec machine for 300 quid (assuming laptop) and you`ll nine out of ten times get brilliant backup for as long as you have the computer, and when you have an equiry you actually get to speak to a human being who ACTUALLY KNOWS WHAT THERE TALKING ABOUT.0

Pault, should the fact that it only has a 90 day end of line warranty worry me? Becuase it does.

The acer aspire 5920 has now been taken off sale at play.com. I have placed an order for it and it is still there in my account, but I am not sure if it will be fulfilled. I guess they are waiting to see what stock they can get of it.0

If you put it in your basket it says out of stockThanks to all who post0 -
A friend of my ordered it yesterday, and it is now saying order taken but no delivery date. I believe it shows 3-4 days delivery at the moment. I'll let you know when theirs is despatched, it may help with guessing league times.0
