The trendy laptops at the moment are the mini laptops following on
the success of the Asus EEE.
They must be bought mostly for kids and portability.
    Otherwise they offer little else.
Little screen. Little keyboard that is hard to use. Little hard drive.
    No optical drive.

The Asus Santa Rosa suggested in this article is a real laptop that is also light,
with good battery life, Vista Premium OS, and large RAM which you need for Vista.
    And a large hard drive.
It can do everything else you can possibly want.
The kids will have a proper laptop too, not a boys toy.

If weight and size is not critical, also check out the under £300 Toshiba's at

Not really a 'powerful' laptop, but cheap and very portable. MSI have released an ultraportable laptop, the Wind, to compete against the Asus Eee and HP Mininote etc. However, these are not quite out yet and will probablt be around £330.

However, Advent have released a rebadged Wind under the model number 4211. This is a perfect Wind Clone, minus the fancy colour schemes, but is available now and is cheaper at £279.99!!

    Basic spec:
    • Intel Atom Processor N270
    • (1.6 GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 512 KB Cache)
    • Genuine Windows(R) XP Home
    • 80 GB Hard Drive & 1GB Memory
    • 10" Widescreen Display
    • Built In Webcam & Microphone
    • 1.12 KG Weight
    • Bluetooth Connectivity
    • Wireless Enabled
    • Stylish Black & Silver Design
These are available from all DSG retailers, i.e. PC World, Dixons etc. and you can find out more details here plus being as I picked up one of these myself on Saturday, if anyone has any questions I'll try and answer them.

    Cheers.

A small piece of advice...if you are buying a laptop with only 1GB memory, budget for another 1GB. Yes, the Vista minimum spec is 1GB, but doubling it will make a huge difference. At the minimum spec, it can be quite frustrating to work with.

I currently have 2GB, and plan to add more. Word processing and "standard" tasks are fine. But even simple graphical tasks like changing the contrast in a photo will give you a noticeable nose-dive in responsiveness.
    Thanks in advance,

    Steve V
  • I have just purchased an Acer Aspire 5920 laptop from Amazon for £184.37! There were various discounts available, I purchased Microsoft Office 2007 and a wireless mouse at the same time with discounts. The laptop comes with Vista Home Premium. The list price for the laptop was £399. I got free delivery and have to say, I am more than pleased!
