Just popped in to say hello :hello:.

I have signed up to Understanding Society and all being well, I intend to sign up to Introduction to Social Sciences in May. I am a bit scared :o as I haven't studied for 14 years so its probably a bit rusty up there! I have a 4 year old daughter and work part time, in September my little girl starts school and the scary thing is, I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up :p . I am hoping that I will get some divine inspiration from somewhere while studying but also think I will be more content with life if I am a little mentally stimulated.

So I have decided to stop lurking and start posting!

I dropped out this week, why? I posted before about being lost, I emailed tutor 3 times no reply, I contacted OU who said the tutor worked during the day and to phone him at night, I did and he never answered, the phone just rang and rang, I told them I wanted to drop out, they said because I had a grant I would have to pay 70%, I cant see how this is fair, I tried and asked for help and they where as much use as a chocolate fire guard, What should I do?

I got 64% for my first ever TMA, I'm on such a high because of that so I'm powering through the rest of my course now - and signed up for AA100 starting in Feb!

Sky, I hadn't studied for 23 years until I started again with the OU - I've found that it helps if you're really into the subject you're studying - sounds obvious, I love Leonardo da Vinci which is the 10 point course I'm doing, and I love coming home from work at night and studying.

My mother this year graduated from the OU with a degree in maths & stats - i was looking through her books today and dear god, how on earth she could even understand what was written I don't know - however, she reads calculas books as her nighttime reading! What she also said nirelandguy, and I was talking to her about my own tutor who is fantastic, that it is totally hit or miss when it comes to the tutors - some of hers have been brilliant, some she's never heard hide nor hare from. My own tutor only takes calls or deals with emails at certains times of the day, this was made clear in her introductory letter to me.

Don't give up, I've signed up for OU courses over the years and never done them, however this time I have my mother as motivation, she's 60 this weekend and I've never been prouder of her than when I went to her graduation, if she can do her degree in Maths then I can do mine in English!

Nirelandguy I've searched through the thread and at no point have you told us what course you are doing.

Having done 2 degrees before even when I've had a helpful tutor I have got lots of help from other students both on and off the course I was studying.

So allow posters on here to help you state what course you are doing. Then ask your questions again.

I'm doing M255, I am totally lost, it would involve starting again which I can't do, and the tutor is as much use as a chocolate tea pot

If it's object orientated programming with Java then your in luck as I can help you.

I don't understand you in stating that you can't start again? Programming isn't easy like with languages (I am doing a OU language course) you have to go through the material repeatedly.

You do it once and understand none of it. Someone gives you a resource, you read your work , then go through it again and understand a bit more. Then you start having dreams of programming and then it all sinks in.

If it is can you start a new thread and post your questions on it. For me and anyone to be able to help you you need to be able to formulate your questions. Once you work out what you don't understand

If you do it today I can help asap otherwise I probably won't be back on the site until Tuesday.

Also I can point you to sites what can help you:
    1. Java Ranch http://www.javaranch.com/ This site has a forum where you can post even the most basic questions
    2. Sun Java http://java.sun.com This site has an online tutorial which is very good and a forum which you can post anything from basic questions to more complex questions
    3. You can also go to http://www.javapassion.com/ and download the pdf's for their java programming course and read them.

Edited to say: Unfortunately with programming courses the tutors can't really help you understand things. Other students and people who have done programming can because they come to the course material from a different view point.

a)Post on the OU forums - even if there isn't a course forum for your subject that appears directly in your desktop, there will be one under OUSA signpost. Read the other posts there too - others may have had the same problem.

b)Ask the OU if you can switch tutors. But even if you can't, don't quit! I've had far more help over the years from the OU forums than from tutors (aside from tutorials)

    You mean 451^2 - 449^2 ?

I've got (451+449)(451-449). I think that's what they're after. Both sum to 1800 anyway. Done the CMA and almost finished the TMA.
