Natwest and CPP scam

  • Very useful information, Mr_Valentine. When I got my Barclaycard, I ground my teeth about this "activation" business, but thought it was obligatory and so had to go through the hard-sell for some kind of i-d insurance. I refused. I always do. Fortunately, unlike the OP, I didn't get charged and have to claim it back. Are the banks not obliged to tell you that "activation" is not obligatory, when it isn't? Otherwise there's some serious misrepresentation going on. Martin should investigate!

Just a quick note to thank Mr Valentine. I had £85 deducted by CPP, I had no notice as CPP had an old address. I called the 01904 544738 no. and spoke to someone who was clearly surprised to get the call, got put across to a couple of equally confused people before being put through to a manager. I asked for a refund, was told that they had written to give me notice and it was my responsibility to update my address with them. I told them that I had informed my bank (Natwest) of my address change and as their last correspondence was on Nat West headed paper, I considered that I had informed them. I got the refund. So thanks muchly!

I really cant believe how this so called company is still getting away with it!! Twice i`ve had issues with cpp saying i have an annual or 3 yr subscription, i was signed up by mbna. but the first time this happened i cancelled my mbna card, 3 months later i get a statement through for 85 quid, when i called mbna they said even though i ne longer have an account cpp can still take money out (How does that work then!) anyway cpp reakoned they had sent leters out about the renewal which clearly they hadn`t on 2 occasions.. these guys are crooks plain and simple. i have filed a complaint with fsa and awaiting a responce.. the more people who make official complaints the better.
  • So happy to have found this thread when I Googled "natwest call to confirm card cpp", as I wanted to address it in some forum.

I called Natwest/CPP (??--actually it was probably CPP, who seemed to have my mother's maiden name! , my name, address and credit card number) to confirm safe receipt and found it mysterious the way that they first pretend to have an electronic system, and then transfer you to "someone to help"- who after a bogus question if the envelope looked tampered with or was OK (the question per se is OK, but it could have been written in the letter) started trying to sell. I had some questions about still using my old card and she didn't seem to know that expiry date refers to "end of month", so that also made me suspicious.

So happy to see that others have acted on this and I am shocked to see that they may actually start charging a person who has not signed up for it. I hope I was sufficiently agressive/assertive on the phone for them to try that on me, but I will surely check my account! I said I wanted to read and she said they would send me stuff and I said no, don't send anything, and she gave me the internet address.

Just a note to the list of banks working with CPP--- I saw, there is no Lloyds, I must say this is probably the 4th or 5th I time I get confirmation that Lloyds is ranging above most others when it comes to decency/ customer ethics.

And I can see HSBC is not on that list either, I had to call HSBC to activate card (different than "confirming safe receipt"). I don't recall that they tried to sell me something, but I am getting more observant on this now, as it seems that everybody want to sell home-insurance for the moment.

Anyway, this is definitely one point down to Natwest, will remember that. I don't think a bank should behave like a bunch of hungry wolves towards their customers.

  • Hi. I've joined up just to post on this thread...

This morning I got two letters in the post from CPP. They were addressed to a man I work with occasionally but sent to my home address. The man doesn't know my home address.

I opened one thinking it was probably just some junk mail from someone who had seen his name and my business together. That kind of thing happens a surprising amount, and since I used to work from home various worky kind of people - and sales agencies and spammers - have that address.

It was a letter from CPP with instructions on how to make a claim and a claim form. Confused, I opened the other one and saw it was from CPP/Natwest confirming details of registering an iPhone with NatWest Advantage Gold Account.

Now I'm utterly baffled. Like I said, the man in question doesn't know my home address and even if he did, why would he be having his claim forms sent to me?

I can't phone him until after the Bank Holiday weekend and if it is a scam I don't want him thinking that working with me is some kind of risk to him. I also feel really bad and a bit embarrassed at opening private mail.

I'm not quite sure what to do now. Does randomly picking names and addresses out of thin air in the hope of getting a sale seem a bit like my paranoid delusion?

If there's a pre-paid envelope, write "person not known at this address" across any documentation, and return it.

When you speak to this person, just tell them you received some post in his name to your address, but returned it to sender stating you didn't live there.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

has anyone here actually successfully canceled their subscription to cpp???
I have tried on numerous occasions, on the phone and in writing, and still they took money from my account! thus causing late charges.
I was told on the phone by an adviser for them that they couldn`t cancel it on the phone because it would be too complicated??? Is it worth taking legal action?

I've been granted a refund. I'll not involve myself in putting this company down because they have dealt with my complaint swiftly and to my satisfaction. It still baffles me how they got my information in the first place though.
