Unfair Easy Jet Policy (PLEAS HELP ME)

I have just recently broken up with my girlfriend of 8 years and unfortunately we have a trip to Switzerland booked very soon. I tried to change the name on the trip from my Ex girlfriends to my sisters. Problem is they charge a £35 admin fee (which in itself is disgusting for a ticket less airline) but they also charge the difference in the cost of flights from when I initially booked them in January to now. Which is more than double!

I am well aware that I ticked the box stating I have read and accept the t&c's. However isn't this similar to bank and credit card charges whereby evan tho you singed a contract saying you will accept the charges at the end of the day they are just extremely unfair. Also who actually sits down and reads through pages and pages of t&c's every time they book or order something online.

Can anybody out there offer me some advice as I am at my whits end here (I'm already in quite a bad place emotionally as you might expect). I simply cant afford to pay this fee but I also can't cancel my Flights either! I am at a total loss. I feel Easy Jet should not be able to get away with this unethical exploitative practice!

No, it is completely different to bank charges, and certainly not unethical and exploitative! They do it so that people do not bulk buy cheap seats and resell them.

You need to either book a new ticket, or pay the change costs.

They wouldn't get away with it if every customer did not buy any tickets from them because of this term.
Unfortunately millions of travellers get cheap deals because they are happy with EasyJet 's terms and conditions.

Not at all similar. Overdraft charges are being disputed due to the relationship of penalty fees on debts not being in line with the work done. Airline tickets dont fall under the same legislation.

The penalty charge issue on debts doesnt suddenly mean all other admin fees charged by others are suddenly unlawful.

  • It isn't just easyjet, I think it is all airlines.

My mum booked 4 seats to Paris earlier this year, unfortunately since then she has been taken seriously ill and will not be able to make the flight so she wants my sister to go in her place. The airline involved will not change the name on the ticket, they will refund taxes, etc., but not the fare. My sister has to check on Monday to make sure she can have the time off work, the person I spoke to on customer service suggested that I do not cancel my mums seat until we are sure whether or not my sister can make it (effectively putting a seat on hold for her), when we are, sure ring back and do the cancellation and purchase of the new ticket (at the prevailing rate, so who knows how much) at the same time.

it may be a ticketless airline but your ex's name is still on all the flight paperwork etc but this is where easyjet make their money - this and through baggage charge - which keeps their ticket prices down. I've seen easyjet flights sell for as little as a few pounds (excl taxes etc) but even still - its a low cost airline and they have to make money some how otherwise they'd of gone into administrators by now.

What is the total price to change the name on the ticket?

£35, as the OP has stated.

What gets me is they seem to be saying that if you change the name on the ticket then you are buying a new fight at the price it is today, not the price it was when you booked/paid for it.

I don't see how they can charge for changing the name of the passenger AND treat it as a new flight purchase.

That is not correct. The total cost is £35 plus the difference in the price of fares between when the ticket was bought and how much it would be now.

  • Already said this but saying it again, it isn't just easyjet. I know of at least one other airline and they told me they didn't think any airline would let you do it, even on first or business class tickets. I'm not easily fobbed off, I tried loads of emotional black mail - easy in the circumstances as my mum is really, really ill - it made not a jot of difference. No how, no way will they change the name on the ticket. You have to cancel one and claim back what you can and re-book the seat, at the prevailing rate, in the new name.

The point is the flight was booked, and maybe paid for at a certain price. They are not purchasuing a new flight they are simply changing the name of the passenger.

Therefore the cost must be the admin cost only.

It is unfair to sell someone a flight at one price and then charge them to change the passenger name AND charge them the price of the fight as if they are buying the flight now!

The price of the fight has already been agreed, if not already paid for!
