This series of 13 DVDs tells the story of Churchill's life, extracted from the unpublished memoirs of the man who saved it, his trusted bodyguard Walter Thompson.
Saturday, May 10, Walter Meets Winston
In the background of almost every piece of footage of Britain's great wartime leader Winston Churchill is an anonymous figure: his bodyguard, Detective Inspector Walter Thompson of Scotland Yard. This is the story of how these two very different characters met, and how the poor boy from London's East End saved his boss from an IRA assassination attempt.
Sunday, May 11, Lawrence and Walter Save the Day
Soon after he became Winston Churchill's personal bodyguard, Walter Thompson was given the challenge of keeping his boss alive during a visit to the Middle East. Churchill was a natural target for assassins and on several critical occasions Walter was rescued by one of the most enigmatic figures of the 20th century - Lawrence of Arabia.
Monday, May 12, Nearly Killed in New York
In 1929, Churchill ceased to be Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Walter Thompson sadly stopped guarding his friend. However, within two years, Winston's outspoken views had gained him fresh and deadly enemies. Walter was recalled, but the next threat to Winston's life came from a totally unexpected direction.
Tuesday, May 13, Indian Nationalist Assassin
Winston Churchill had served in India as a young Army officer and he believed that India should remain as part of the British Empire. However, on a speaking tour of the USA, an Indian Nationalist organisation forced Walter to draw his gun on three occasions in order to protect Winston's life.
Wednesday, May 14, Nazi Sniper Plan
During the 1930s Churchill's outspoken opposition to Hitler made him a marked man. So much so that French Intelligence got wind of a German plot to assassinate him. Immediately, Winston called his former bodyguard, Walter Thompson, out of retirement to protect him once more.
Thursday, May 15, Dangerous Travels
As the Second World War began, Churchill was brought back into the government after 10 years in the wilderness. For his bodyguard, Walter Thompson, it was the beginning of the six most active and nerve-wracking years of his career.
Friday, May 16, Surviving the Blitz
By June 1940, Britain was facing Nazi invasion. However, the next year was to bring a host of new perils. For as the bombs rained down, the one person to whose safety Winston gave no thought was himself and Walter had to cope as best he could.
Saturday, May 17, Attack at the Flying Boat Dock
The entry of the United States into the Second World War meant an enormous increase in responsibility for Churchill's bodyguard Walter Thompson. Very soon, Winston was to come within seconds of assassination by a lone gunman.
Sunday, May 18, Winston's Double
In the middle of 1942, Britain's Prime Minister Winston Churchill and his bodyguard Detective Inspector Walter Thompson set off on their most dangerous journey yet, braving the fighters of the Luftwaffe in North Africa to get first to Egypt and then on to the Soviet Union.
Monday, May 19, Suicide Attack in Tehran
Hitler's henchmen have devised a plan to kill Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt at the Tehran Conference. It is up to Walter and the intelligence services to protect Winston's life from immediate danger.
Tuesday, May 20, The Kiss of Life?
Winston Churchill returns from Tehran in very poor health, so much so that his doctor expects him to die. Walter's devotion is such that he insists on staying at Winston's side on the crucial night and disaster is averted.
Wednesday, May 21, The Sewer Bomb
When Winston visits Athens he is supposed to stay at a hotel where Greek guerrillas have placed 1000lbs of dynamite in a nearby sewer. They shoot at his plane and even fire on HMS Ajax, his temporary home in Piraeus harbour.
Thursday, May 22, Love Him to Death
It is VE Day and Winston and Walter have several journeys to make through the jubilant crowds. Winston wants to walk but at the last minute is pulled on to the roof of his car by Walter.

"A Night in NYC," a free CD of Moby’s music comes with next week’s Sunday Times (11 May). As well as featuring tracks from Last Night, it encompasses music from the various phases of Moby’s career.
Track by track
Here is the track listing for next week’s free CD. It takes us from his first hit, Go, to his new single, Alice.
1 Ooh Yeah One of the songs from his new album, Last Night, Ooh Yeah features 1970s-style disco beats and a feather-light vocal.
2 Honey The first single from Play introduced us to the field-song-sampling sound of the album.
3 In My Heart Taken from Moby’s 2002 album, 18, In My Heart echoes the style of Play, with a sweeping, yearning musical backing.
4 Disco Lies Another new track, Disco Lies harks back to 1990s dance styles, with a powerful vocal by Shayna Steele over a restless beat.
5 Go Moby’s first hit, taken from his self-titled debut album, Go samples Laura Palmer’s Theme from the cult television series Twin Peaks.
6 Everyday It’s 1989 One of the standout tracks from Last Night, Everyday It’s 1989 has more than a hint of Black Box’s Ride on Time about it, and that can’t be bad.
7 Lift Me Up Moby takes the vocal lead on this track from Hotel, which backed ITV’s Formula One coverage.
8 Extreme Ways The one that goes “Oh, baby, then it fell apart”, Extreme Ways will be familiar to fans of the Bourne movies, as it plays over the end credits of Identity, Supremacy and Ultimatum.
9 Natural Blues One of the best moments on Play: you may know it better as “Ooh Lordy, troubles so hard”.
10 Alice Moby’s latest single is a slightly uncharacteristic track amid Last Night’s dance music: harder-edged, rap-heavy electronica.
11 Porcelain The prettiest moment from Play: stop-start strings, wandering piano lines and a softly sung vocal.
12 Last Night The title track from the new album offers a more chilled moment, with a stunning vocal by Sylvia Gordon.
13 Rockets A previously unreleased slice of ambient prettiness.0 -
