Ryanair - beware purchase card fees are being inaccurately shown

No - purchase page fees are false advertising and illegalIn a nutshell where can I get a visa electron please applied @ Barclays but got given a connect instead
Abbey offers a Visa electron card instead of a Visa debit card but you need to ask for it. It is not an alternative to a credit card and works in exactly the same way as any other debit card. Lots of banks provide them but you have to ask for one to be issued instead of their normal debit card.0 -
I just rang the Smile Bank (internet part of Co-op) and they are sending me a Visa Electron card and letting me keep my old Debit card. Would like to take the moral high ground as I have little doubt Ryanair try to trick us, but hey those cheap flights are just to appealing at the moment!0

No - purchase page fees are false advertising and illegalThere is a big note at the top of the screen saying that they are currently having system problems and the full prices are not showing.
I generally think Ryanair offer good value but this is taking the p in my view. Theyve told to display the prices with taxes and are blatantly disregarding this. How can it possibly be Microsoft's fault? Easyjet can quote their prices with tax. They are more expensive for what I am looking at so will probably fly Ryainair anyway but I dont know why they have to try these silly tactics. Its irritating.0 -
No - purchase page fees are false advertising and illegalHi,
The response (as expected) from the AUC was that I need to send a written complaint to Ryanair (as opposed to the two phone calls I made to complain to Ryanair), await the written response from Ryanair (expected six week minimum delay, although Wizz did take five months to respond to a complaint I sent to them) & when Ryanair confirms they will do nothing I can then write to the AUC again with my complaint. Arduous, but on principle I will proceed with this - Ryanair in my view "stole" this money from me.
I've also submitted a complaint on this to the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority), although it was not technically an advert it was showing a deceiving value which encouraged my purchase.
In my original home country (Ireland) we have a very accessible Small Claims Court, I believe here in UK we need to go to the County Court & through the Small Claims Track for a test case like this? Any advice from any of you that have done similar would be appreciated.
Re: the "disagreements" between some of you on this thread - I think the key thing is that several of us were shown an untruthful card fee (£1.20 per sector) when we used the popup card fee window on the purchase page, whereas others who purchased (later I assume, after Ryanair had updated the site, e.g. Pennylane) were shown the new card fees on the SAME popup window. So all please read fully any posts others make before responding, and think about how phrasing may be interpreted incorrectly by others, that way we don't have unneccesary disagreements
If anyone else has suggestions on how to pursue this further - on a point of principle, as this wasn't just misleading, it was illegal - then please let me know, I will update as I progress further.0 -
got refused @Halifax for a visa electron as it is only issued to 16 - 18 year olds now. Does anyone have any other suggestions where I can get one from?0

No - purchase page fees are false advertising and illegalTry the Abbey. I got one last year without any difficulty. I already had an account with them with a debit card. I was able to open another account with an electron card issued. Make sure you ask for an electron card with the account.0

Wonder what Ryanair will do when the new regulations concerning full disclosure of actual costs (ie you see total costs without there being all these little hidden extras)come into being at the end of the year?
More glitches on their system eh?
By the way, flew once with Ryanair..........never never ever again. I would rather walk.0 -

There was no indication anywhere on the page or in small print that they had raised the debit card fee nearly 300% (per person/per sector if you dont mind). If this were indicated as the final amount I would have had the choice to use an equally priced credit card or indeed my sons Abbey National Visa electron and saved all the charge. It's about honest information so we can have a choice rather than being taken for a ride.
This was a web problem and this fool was not about to pay for their screw up. If I screwed up with a name or a date they would not allow me to correct it for free. Apparently some of you would be quite prepared to pay for such incompetance because after all, the fares are such good value. Well go ahead be my guest. In fact why don't you call them and tell them that their fares are so low that you don't mind paying some more. Then they can refund the rest of us. They are laughing all the way to the Maldives on their big fat bonuses because of such apathy. 50 euros (£40) as a debit card fee on a single card transaction. Can anyone tell me have they heard of anything more vile than that con. JUST PUT IT ON THE FARE AND TELL US ABOUT IT. If they stated that on the appropriate page then the choice was mine to use what card I wanted. They took it behind my back and that is just another kind of fraud and some may say theft. Forget these scams Ryanunfair just tell me what the actual pricing of everything is so we can make appropriate decisions. Just be straight with people and they will give you honest custom back whatever the price you need to achieve.
For those on this forum that thinks it's alright to shrug at this type of Illegal consumer practice because they are still the cheapest around by all means carry on. They’ll love you for it. Do you think being misled out of 50 Euros is some kind of joke? It's that sort of apathy that only encourages O’Leary’s school of magic pricing to thrive and get away with things. Do some here have shares in Ryanair or something?
Forget wasting time arguing with apologists. Do something about it and get the honesty and respect we expect in 2008
Some people need to get out more ...  :whistle:Gone ... or have I?0
