I have just checked with my neighbour in the next flat (same house) and his handwritten "confirmation code" is the same as my one. Now this means that either the code is either the same for everyone and actually means nothing or it's the code that is assigned to our specific house (which has 7 flats btw). I think this means at worst that they don't know my flat number which is giving me some hope that they won't be able to complete my address.
The more likely reasoning is that the code probably means nothing and is just used as a confidence ploy to get you to ring. .
Correct. All their stuff is a fishing expedition because they're wa-aa-y too cheap to be able to afford clean lists from reputable list brokers.
They need you to contact them so they know who you are.
And they need to know who you are not for the purposes of identity fraud but for the purposes of identity targeting.
In other words: they need you to act like a mug so you can get mugged by all the other muggers who operate direct mail scams using direct mail lists headed: THESE PEOPLE ARE MUGS (or word to that effect.)
Anyway. Don't worry. You've done nothing wrong. And don't get over-excited about identity theft, either. Outfits like this aren't in that business (it would be too technologically sophisticated for them anyway). They're just cheap bottom-feeders who will go away sooner or later -- sooner, if we had anything remotely approaching consumer protection in this country.
But we don't.0 -
Hi all, it looks like this SCAM as hit West Yorkshire....WATCH OUT ALL.0

These letters have arrived in the Scarborough area and with the telephone number given with the Scarborough STD I was tempted to phone. Luckily I have a computer and via google came to this site. Thank you for keeping us in the picture regarding these scams. We all know in our hearts that you never get something for nothing!!0

I live in West Yorks. I have just received one of these Congratulations slips from Matters Consulting Ltd, I checked it out online and Lo! there was your post on mse.com Thanks for confirming my suspicions, have reported them to the TS. They are indeed trying the north of England.

I am also in West Yorkshire - Bradford.
I also live in an apartment block and it looked like there were more of these for other flats.
I live by the old adage 'You don't get owt for nowt' so checked the wondrous Google first.
Can't say I was suprised to find this thread!
Beware to all if you're offered anything for free. It just doesn't happen. Well...... rarely!!!
Another call to Trading Standards from me!0 -
received today, asks me to call 01782 880090, googled this with no response, so googled Matters consulting, and found the link to here. Has anyone been having any number withheld calls, related to this? I never answer there, and have had them sun/mon night, around 7.30pm.0

The longer this operation is allowed to continue, the clearer does the lousy state of UK consumer protection become.
A General Election is likely to be held within the next 12 months.
Regardless of who your sitting MP happens to be -- unless they're one of the many Honourable Members having to stand down for being Dishonourable -- why not drop him / her a line about Matters Consulting / Survey UK?
It would take but one paragraph to set out the details of this outfit's odious activities.
Another paragraph to say those activities are typical of the way this country allows hucksters, scammers and downright fraudsters to lay siege to the nation's letter boxes and make suckers out of the unwary.
And a final paragraph to say, unless you take action on my behalf to get this particular operation closed down, then you can forget any vote from me.0 -
Just to let you know they are still targeting the Scarborough area. Got one today and thanks to Google and MSE it's been binned!0
