The biggest tip to avoid the lumps in mash is to make sure the potatoes are THOROUGHLY cooked first. If they are a little hard in the middle, there will be lumps unless you go to town with the whisk or masher.

This is what Delia has to say:

Sorry if someone has put this link already.

If you want some different mash ideas use this link and type 'mash' in the search box on the right:

I find using a hand blender can make them gloopy.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I've found that the old metal potato mashers with v shaped holes do a far better job of lump removal than the plastic ones with round holes in.

Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts

Depends what's in the shop, but have you tried Desiree, Kerr's Pink, Cara or King Edwards? Generally I find that baking type potatoes make good mash, but others may have different opinions.
And I'm definitely a ricer girl, always lump free mash this way.
  • I just use whatever is in a 'white potatoes' bag and cook them well. They get a quick bash to get them mostly mashed then I add butter/marg, and mash some more. Then I remember who I am angry with and give them a good beating! Visualisation, works every time! :D

But mash is suppose to be smooth.

Who said? Why? When? How did they decide? Who made the decision? Was there a vote? I'm not convinced!

Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...
