With two small children I was next to useless to the men. Therefore the pints of squash were flowing all day and a tenner each for them to buy themselves a real pint at the end of the day did not seem unreasonable.
Surely the removal company should not be depending on the poeple they are moving to help them out?John

My DH and I always get them a breakfast or lunch and if they do a good job we give them a slab of beer each. Our last move we decided we'd give them 3bottles of whisky. DH won them in various draws and raffles and we don't touch them stuff. It saved us buying beer and got rid of bottles. I think if you've always got the kettle they work harder and are more careful. We've never had a bad move (touch wood) and only a couple of ikea glasses bust - which I'd packed.
I'm as tight as the next, but looking after the removals can save me hours of hard work moving boxes back into the right rooms etc! What's £20-£30 on beer out of your disturbance allowance?LMB 01/03/08£9001.61 £10/6 6089.70 - 32%paid off!

We usually keep the kettle going and they get a tip, if they where good.
Once, we had some, who said, that they wanted some fags, otherwise the move would take longer. didn't take them up on their offer and complaint about them afterwards. They where working with a really bad attitude.I wish Germany had a website like moneysavingexpert!0 -
21st century soldiering - life of bloody riley!
When I were a single lad, when not sleeping in box in 'ole int middle o' road....
Moving from Colchester to Bergen, we had to lug the boxes up to the "Pads" new accomodation.. "removals people" and tips.... it wasn't even invented back then
We were lucky not to get the tip of someones boot up our ringers when struggling up 3 storeys of stairs in Bergen Hohne with completey overloaded boxes full of car parts and engines no less!
A cup of tea would have been sorely appreciated - did we get even that - miserable bloody pads!
Tips? Tips?
Now I just look back on it and wonder if it was all just a bad dream....lol
hehe
When I left the army in 1990 (just missing the Gulf War - Hooray!! - yes, I watched it all eating kit kats and supping tea in Edinburgh on the TV and laughing at the "factual reports" *cough*) I did an extensive "field" trial of the new issue high leg combat boot. They can in fact be worn for a period of at least 2 years without bulling or even boot polish :T
I did discover last year that if you leave the same boots in a box for 7 years the soles actually crumble and fall off....0 -
I have done a fair few moves in my nearly 10 years of marriage and have never given them cash but do feed them continuously throughout the day with bacon/sausage baps, packets of biscuits, cakes and crisps etc and keep the tea going every half hour. Last time I did give the guys a lovely candle each (I am a PartyLite consultant), worth £14.95 each for them to give to their wives.Murphy's No More Pies Club Member No. 680

No they shouldn't be, but the men told us that they were really short of staff at that time and they were cutting corners by sending less than the required number on the job. They knew the size of our house and the amount of furniture we had and yet they still only sent two men.0 -
helliecopter - is that Al's chippy? If it is then they are really good, I miss that part of living in Bergen! That and Orchidee's chinese takeaway! And viva's. But thats about it lol
We just make sure that tea coffee and biccies are in good supply for the removal men, that's as good as it gets in our house lolLBM - August 2008 - Debts then - £33390 - 2nd LBM - November 2009 - Debts then - £18500:mad:

Hi I have moved 10 times in the last 13 years and have only ever given fags and booze if i felt they deserved it. I always supply loads of tea coffee and bacon sarnies to keep them happy. We moved a month ago and the lads were so good they did not want much as they wanted to get away early so they just got on with it. Not a thing damaged either. Holts removal fab company0
