I thought Tipping was a town in China?

    I'm kidding

What drills my goat is the rubbish looking pickled egg jar with tinsel wrapped round the rim, and a hand-scrawled sign saying, "Tips" stuck to it with sellotape. The jar is usually accompanied by a sour-faced cashier that wants to be anywhere but behind the counter!

If you're in the service industry and you do something exceptional, then a small tip could be forthcoming, but don't expect a tip for good service as that is what is expected, surely?

I have a Tesco shop delivered weekly. With working and 3 kids it is a god send.

I always tip them a £1.00 and despite having numerous different delivery men the tip has always been gratefully received. There again I always make sure I have used a money off code or a code for additional points so feel I have saved money that way.

From what I can see they are on very low pay and I can afford to do it. I tip taxis, hairdressers, the bin men and post man at Christmas. We just always have and I wouldn't feel right not to.

Do you tip the checkout assistant or the trolley boy in Tesco/Sainsbury? No - and they are not allowed to accept if you do. Likewise the delivery drivers. They are paid the same as all the other supermarket staff and receive all the same benefits. Any driver caught accepting tips would be disciplined and possibly sacked. A smile and a thank you is all that is needed.

I agree, as per my comments earlier. I also suspect the delivery drivers are earning more than most of the staff there. Tescos have about 5 grades of staff, from porter (bottom), general assistant (shelf stacker, 2nd from bottom), checkout operator (next one up), etc. When I worked for them, the difference was about 20p an hour, but that was 10 years ago, so I suspect the differences are more profound.

Either way, the staff are NOT allowed to accept tips and would be disciplined if found out.

Shelf stackers, trolleys, checkout assistant etc all get the same rate of pay now. CSD get 25p an hour more. Not sure but the drivers might get a few pence more an hour.

We always tip as the men take the bags into the kitchen for us, and it's nice to have "curbside" delivery like that. We do live on the ground floor and are an easy delivery, but it doesn't seem right not to tip, and it's just a quid. If we lived up stairs it would require several trips carrying crates, so we'd tip more or help carry the crates up.

That said, you aren't expected to tip and the delivery men often seem surprised to get one. Do what feels right, but if the man has to carry items up stairs, it would be very considerate to give a small tip if you can afford it.

Nobody has mentioned ASDA so I will.

I've been a Home Shopping Driver for almost 4 years (from day one of my store starting internet shopping) and when all the drivers were in training we were told that we were not allowed to accept tips. But then the manager of our department said to us that if we did receive a tip to keep quiet about it.

I do accept tips BUT only off regular customers, only because I'm worried about 'being set up' as ASDA head office ring customers for their opinions and also have 'mystery shoppers'. Can't afford to get the sack (£6.03 per hour still pays the bills!)

All I can say is that we don't expect a tip, it's very nice of you all, thankyou, but please don't be offended if we refuse it as we're only trying to keep our jobs.

Tesco had the same policy. If I was portering (OK, trolley boy ;)) and I helped somebody out to their car with their shopping, I was not allowed to accept any tips. I can't imagine the home delivery guys are any different.
I used to work for waitrose as a cashier and sometimes trolley girl they had a strict no tip policy too!!

However this one oldguy once insisted on tipping me in the store carpark for carrying his stuff out to his car and loading it, and he wouldnt take no for an answer problem was i was due back on the till so wasnt allowed to have cash on me so i accepted the tip and worked till my break with 3 £1 coins loose in my shoe lol!

I have never tipped my Tesco delivery guy - but felt awkward not doing it (I'd always tip the takeaway delivery guy!). Having read the above I feel better about not doing it (although probably still would if service was exceptional!)
